Wooden Boat Magazine, Peter H Spectre. Painting and varnishing is part art and part science. No matter the standard of finish - utilitarian through show quality and anything in anything in between - the keys to it are a well-conceived plan of action, the correct choice of tools and materials, a careful preparation of the surface, proper application of the coating, and a "feel" for what you are doing.

Only 10 left in stock (more on the way). I have used the Woodenboat Series publications in conjunction with woodworking and boat building seminars, and find they compliment the course work well and usually provide additional information. I am not experienced enough to use these manuals without a seminar presentation, but I think experienced boat builders could use these as stand-alone instruction.

Reviews about Painting & Varnishing (The Woodenboat Series) (7):

We have been restoring an old wooden boat and have purchased this book in addition to a woodenboat restoration book. It has much more detail than the restoration book. My husband has used it as a basis for many other projects, he feels it is an excellent reference.

As an owner of a vintage wooden boat, my relative, the recipient of this book I gave him, says it holds all the information he needs to do quality restoration work as it is needed.

I bought this book because I wanted to know more about wood finishes that would stand up under harsh conditions (specifically, chainsaw-carved yard art). I got some of what I wanted, and I learned more about boat maintenance than I'll ever need to know given that I have never owned even a rowboat.

The book is engaging. Interesting side trip into a foreign universe, that of wooden boats and the people who build lives around them.
Livina
Plain, practical information, well-written and photographed.

Very well written with information from experienced workers .I would recomend this book to anyone who likes to work on older boats that have character and don't look like a pair of Nike sneakers..

The book gives good tips for varnishing wooden boats. It helps you understand the different paint systems that are used today.
