The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) attempted in 1939 to standardize atmospheric corrosion of structures. Several related versions of this procedure were created to provide greater acceleration of the corrosion damage or to better simulate the damage that occurs in specific services. A Committee G-1 was created by ASTM to handle corrosion issues. During this period, NACE International also reorganized its Technical Practices Committee with a structure of unit committees organized by industry. ASTM Committee G-1 pioneered the concept of a reference test method.
