Phase equilibrium knowledge is required for the design of all sorts of chemical processes that may involve . Phase equilibrium is a common assumption used in process systems modelling.

Phase equilibrium knowledge is required for the design of all sorts of chemical processes that may involve separations, reactions, fluids flow, particle micronization, etc. Indeed, different phase behavior scenarios are required for a rational conceptual process design. The aim of this chapter is to present the possible fluid mixture phase behavior that can be found in binary, ternary, and multicomponent systems. In its most fundamental form the condition relates to the equivalence of temperature, pressure and Gibbs free energy of a species in the phases considered to be in equilibrium.

The well-known equilibrium routines Solgasmix and ChemSage were used for sulphate - sulphuric acid equilibria in concentrated solutions. A reactor calculation was performed for sulphuric acid digestion of ilmenite ore in TiO2-pigment manufacturing and for series of reactors in the NPK-fertilizer process. The calculated maximum concentrations of such effluents as SO2, H2S and respectively NOx NH3 and fluorine were compared with Kemira Oy’s process data.
