Since then, auto transport trucks have progressed through several stages of evolution, from flat trailers to ramped double-deckers and streamlined units. This chronological scrapbook of archival and contemporary photography documents the evolution of auto transporters over the last 75 years, while introductory text and detailed captions explain the development of these vehicles. Truck and automotive enthusiasts will enjoy the wonderful photography showing haulers from several manufacturers filled with factory-fresh cars from every American automaker.

I have an unusual perspective - I witnessed some of this, both the car hauling and the trailer building when I was quite young. Sometime after WW2, my father Leonard Troy and grandfather Jack bought Metropolitan Convoy, and some years later Arco Auto Carriers. They were based out of Clarks Summit, PA. My father was an aeronautical engineer who brought that background with him when he created Troyler in nearby Scranton, PA. The idea was to use a super strong but light framework like an airplane's to build a trailer that was much lighter then was common. No hydraulics helped keep weight down to. His Troyler concepts were widely copied, but for years I could spot one of his going down the street. When they first came out, local and state police looking for truckers to ticket were shocked by a car hauling trailer that carried more cars at a lot lower gross weight.

The book notes M B Troy as behind Troyler or Arco; Mel was my uncle, and eventually took over both businesses as I understand it. BTW, Troyler also built a variety of trailers for the US military. But my dad's Troyler design set new standards for hauling more cars economically and helped change the industry.
