by Inc. Volkswagen of America (Author). Great Tech manual if your looking for information on ur Bus or Type IV. I bought it as a recomendation when I was building the Type IV for my Beetle. It has good technical info, great diagrams and if a must for bench too rebuilds. This manual has been indispensable in my restoration of a 1977 Type 2. In fact, this book has been so valuable, I have bought two copies (after I thought I lost the first in a move). The pictures are clearly printed and the instructions/steps are well-written and easy to follow. The manual is printed on quality paper stock and feels sturdy.

This Volkswagen Station Wagon, Bus Repair Manual Type 2: 1968-1979 offers air cooled Volkswagen Bus and Van enthusiasts comprehensive repair information for their Type 2 vehicles. Maintenance, tune-up, and mechanical repairs are covered (except the 1974 and later Campmobile interior equipment). No VW "Bay Window" bus owner should be without this manual. It is essential. The older versions of the manual have color fold-out wiring diagrams, which are far better than the cheap current black and white versions, but the more recent editions have corrections. Get one of each. The older ones are available from used book sellers and on a popular auction site.

As for the hardcover edition, I got one to keep as my "definitive" copy, with all the notes from previous repairs. I keep this one on the shelf, as the ones that are in the vehicles (I have owned over a dozen buses) inevitable undergo some wear and tear. This hardcover edition suffers from having the black-and-white single-page chopped up wiring diagrams that I complained above above, but they HAVE included, in an appendix, color versions of these. they are still on single pages, and are still chopped up to fit on those pages (that is, no fold-out pages) but at least they are in color. So, there is some improvement there. But darn it! it falls short of what it could have been. Why can't Bentley put in the full page diagrams?

Well, it is considered the best. It has lots of detail, but never enough detail. I love it when they say, " use the pitman arm puller and remove the pitman arm...." It took 3 days to REMOVE the rusted 46 year old pitman arm rusted to the steering gear box. Or they just throw in, "remove the engine and transmission and then the shift rod will pull right out...." Funny right?

I have a 1971 Westfalia that I am in the process of repairing/restoring and this book has been invaluable in providing me with the technical information that I need. Explanations are clear and detailed and the illustrations are very helpful. I tend to be more geeky about things so I prefer this Bentley manual with it's extensive details and procedures over the John Muir Idiot Guide. The John Muir Guide is a little too generic and cartoonish for me. I also prefer a good hardback manual to the softcover ones. With this manual and the internet you should be able to obtain any information you need for your VW Bus.

This is THE book to own if you're going to do any work on an early Bay Window bus!

Manual received fairly quickly and in fair enough shape for the price.
It has become my "bible" for refurbishing my "new" 1979 VW Bus that had been sitting for 11 years.
After reading up on the areas I'm concentrating on first I see it's not 100% complete for detailed information
on some areas I'm working on but close enough. Will probably pick up another Manual like "Idiots Guide"
for secondary reference.

I was so happy that I was able to find this book/manual. I recently came into possession of a 1978 VW Westfalia. When I noticed oil leaking from underneath and took a peak, I saw that the valve cover gasket was NOTHING like I'd ever seen. I was aware that the engine was in the rear and quite different than "traditional" engine set-ups, but everything seemed foreign (as it is). This book is fantastic! Once you reference the book and find what you're looking for, you immediately have your "ah ha!" moment and can continue repair confidently. A must have!

Great Tech manual if your looking for information on ur Bus or Type IV. I bought it as a recomendation when I was building the Type IV for my Beetle. It has good technical info, great diagrams and if a must for bench too rebuilds. I will recomend taking down to a kinkos and having it spiral bound. Cost me less then $15 and it nice to be able to lay it flat or flip it open to the page u need.

In my experience, if you're going to own a repair manual for your VW, make sure it's a Bentley. When it comes to auto mechanics, I'm rather inept. But, using this book, I was able to put a new long block in 1971 Bus. There were a few snags but that was because of my lack of skill, not because the manual failed to correctly and thoroughly detail each required process.
My copy is rife with stains and dirt from being used 'in the field.'
Generally speaking, this manual covers it all, but there were a few occasions were I had to cross-reference to the vastly inferior Hayes manual for the same vehicle. I also cross-referenced an old Chilton manual for a better illustration of the Oil filter assembly since this book uses more 'exploded views' than cross-sections of assembled components.
If you have an old bus - you need to have this book.
