Having recently purchased a Chevrolet Volt I was very interested to purchase and read this book. Edsall goes into a great deal of detail about the entire process of conceiving, designing, and developing the Volt concept vehicle and the original generation production vehicle.

The foreword is written by Bob Lutz. The official description of the book is as follows: The Chevrolet Volt was introduced to the motoring public with great fanfare in autumn 2008.

To wit, as described in the book, GM engineering guru Jon Lauckner laid out the argument to Bob Lutz and the rest of the GM engineering team: All-electric means you have to keep carrying more weight in an ever-increasing vicious cycle.

It's not often your car gets a book written about it. Mini, Fiat 500 and VW bug owners have theirs, this is for us Chevy Volt owners. It is printed on high-quality paper and includes lots and lots of color pictures of the design process and pilot production phase. I think some photos are taken from the "Man Made" TV show which also visited the Pilot production line. As some other reviewer said, it's startling how many people it takes to build a modern vehicle. A lot of them are mentioned by name here, with some explanation of their contribution. It's all fascinating, with what I imagine is a sanitized description of the company politics that went on behind the scenes.
Now for the bad news, the technical details are pretty light. You're definitely getting an automotive journalist author here, not an engineer or even an EV enthusiast. There is not much on design trade-offs on the basic design, but there is some on the refining process, like aerodynamic tuning.
The real downer is the binding, essentially two giant slabs of the cheapest cardboard. Heaven knows what the publisher had in mind. Either the publisher left it to his 4-yr old daughter to handle, then refused to give her any supplies to work with; or someone was trying to give it the feel of an Engineer's Lab Notebook, but I suspect he had never seen one because they are bound much more nicely than this book.
A better book on car design is "The Prius That Shook The World". You can find it on PDF out on the web. Apparently published by Toyota and handed out to dealerships, it gives a much more interesting view into the world of auto designers.
But if you have a Volt, definitely buy this book for your coffee table. In 2017 they're cheap, it's not worth the original $30 price!

Having recently purchased a Chevrolet Volt I was very interested to purchase and read this book. Edsall goes into a great deal of detail about the entire process of conceiving, designing, and developing the Volt concept vehicle and the original generation production vehicle. My only regret with this book is that that's as far as it goes. It would be great if the author and publisher update the book with an edition that covers the reception and continuing develop of the first generation Volt, as well as the development of the 2016/17 second generation. Still, this book is highly recommended for anyone interested in GM's inner workings, electric vehicles, or the Volt specifically.

The inside story of how this fantastic automobile came into existence. As a current owner, of two of these Chevy Volt's, I can say that it is the best car that I have owned in 40 years.
This car and other electrics now being manufactured have been a major contributor in solving the recent energy crises.
The only draw back is that many people simple do not understand what a great achievement this has been. Overtime, hopefully more people will wake up to recognize how great this applied technology will benefit mankind. Thank you, General Motors Chevrolets Engineers and managers for being a pioneer in bring this to the consumer. Tesla Motors, Nissan and others did great also, but for me the range extender version of the electric car works the best for me at this time. As batteries improve the future can only get better.

Very good read if you are an auto or techno enthusiast. As a proud owner of a Chevy Volt, it was great to read about the technological hurdles the engineering team went through to bring this car to Market.

Love the book and adore the vehicle. Simply the best motor vehicle in the universe!

Excellent read, an interesting and well-illustrated look at the development of the Chevy Volt. It includes photos of the prototype versions, and described the complicated process of developing what was then one of the most advanced cars ever built. If you own a Volt, you should own this book!

Hey, it's not the slickest packaging but the content is great. The writing and photos are great so you feel a part of the development as the book unfolds. If you allow yourself to appreciate the intense effort and superbly talented people that made this car come to life, you'll savor the accomplishments this book covers so well.

Whatever your political views, I can't see how the best of the human spirit could be ignored in this well-told story of a special car.
If you are an EV fan, you need this book, because it is "the book". It was purchased to give as a gift and well received. Although it is a new hardbound book, because it is made with cardboard, it appears to be paperback. Get it on sale and you'll feel better about the book quality.
