We will be studying for our captain's licenses as we pursue the Great Loop one more time. We find the book so far to be as other captins have recommended. This guide along with the practical experience we are getting (6000 miles and counting) appear to be the perfect prepartion. The explanations, simple illustrations, and practice questions are concise and pair well with the various conditions and types of cruising we've experienced. It would not be as helpful if you had limited or no experience beyond your local haunts. It also appears to be well organized for reference. Follow us as we prep for the test at [...]

This is an excellent book, that is now out of print. If you are studying for the 100 ton, this is a great place to start. Budd has his own perspective on presenting the information, and he has a nice writing style. This book has proven the test of time, it has been out for a few decades, which is a long time for a training manual. Great resource, if you can find a copy.

This was an older version when I bought it but the basics are the same. This is a good prep to know the expectations prior to jumping into the full deal.

Well presented information, but some is outdated today.

Still would help explain some areas of study that someone looking for a 6 pack or 100 ton master could use.

I've barely waded into this guide, but it seems to be very complete. A tad dry, but also not a lot of extra fluff to distract from the task of getting licensed. So far, so good.

Clear, Concise, effective information to help you pass the exam and get your ticket for far less than the voluminous Houston or MET manuals. I would and do recommend this book to any crew member looking to obtain a 100 ton license. I purchased this manual ten years ago after two captains I knew recommended it to me. I used this manual to obtain my license and have since passed the recommendation on to several others who have obtained their licenses using only this book.
.... I used this test preparation manual to sit for my Master's ticket in St. Louis 12 years ago. Since that time I have purchased an additional 5 copies of this well written, humorous instructional manual. I am purchasing 3 more tonight... two to give as gifts to young, bright wanna-be captains. The third copy is to replace mine.
...even if you plan to go to Sea School... this book will be worth it's value.... study and learn this book and you will "ace" the charting element...
