Clay and Sally Clarkson's Educating the WholeHearted Child is about rediscovering God's original design for the family. What you'll find in this book is a homeschooling model that makes sense. It's an approach that is based on sound biblical principles of nurture, discipleship, instruction, and learning. This book contains a strategy for Christian home education which considers all aspects of raising a child within a hierarchical framework. The foundation of the framework is discipleship, and once that is in place adding the three 'r's, oral discussion skills, investigations, and finally discretionary studies.

I wanted to get this book for sometime and I'm really glad that I did. . Educating the WholeHearted childhood goes beyond the what of homeschooling and tells you how to do it: How to approach your children from a parent/educator perspective and how to make your home a place where learning is just what happens naturally. Their advice is indispensable to the new to homeschooling family. Like how colored pencils are a better choice than felt tip marker; what to do with a younger sibling while the elder is doing map work (color their own copy!), and good ideas for natural writing opportunities. The books has a number of supply lists and explains what to do with them.

This book is written from a very Christian perspective but it has such invaluable information that I really recommend it to anyone who thinks that children are fully persons in their own right. Take what you need and leave the rest.

The Clarksons have done a wonderful job presenting their parenting & homeschooling values and practices. This book really is worth reading. It's important to read with discernment, however. They tend to take a heavy hand with a few of their beliefs.

They caution against mass media books and science fiction. My children read a lot of "quality" literature but they also enjoy the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Star Wars, and other things the Clarksons call "twaddle." They recommend Pilgrim's Progress which horrified me. That book, even the versions for children, present a distant and inaccessible God who leaves us to journey alone down a dangerous path with hidden dangers and numerous temptations that could permanently sidetrack us. It's the absolute wrong picture of the Christian journey for children.

Those are a few examples of what I saw as negatives in the book. There is so much that is good, though, and it far outweighs the bad. Their presentation of the mission of parenting is wonderful. Their suggestions on keeping joy in life and putting people over things can't be said enough. (Although the suggestion to hire a house cleaning service when mom is bogged down with homeschooling is always a little irritating. Not many families can fit that in their budget.)

If you aren't homeschooling or you want a shorter book, their newest book, "The Lifegiving Home" has many of the same themes and is also well worth reading.

This is not only a great homeschooling book, but the first couple chapters are a awesome look at what the foundation of our family should look like. I love this book and it was incredibly helpful in keeping my focus where it needs to be.

I read my local library's first edition of this book and loved it so much I purchased the updated version. It is nearly twice and thick and filled with twice as much wisdom. Such a good reference for home schooling and family life.

As a homeschooling mom of 4 ages 6 and under, reading blogs I came across this book, having read The Life giving home and companion, I bought this and after reading 100 pages it is already one of my top homeschooling resources, its a huge book, filled with wisdom and knowledge of a homeschooling spirit led christian family who helped revive the homeschooling move of God in America, their family is a testimony and Sally is like a mom the way she writes is encouraging and reassures me of my own homeschooling way of life led by faith I highly recommend this book it covers every aspect of a christ centered homeschool. I especially like all of the quotes in the side columns.
