Love Me
Gonna be brief here but I could go on for DAYS about what I've learned - both about myself and my dog - from this book. I don't care if you've got a pointing Lab or not, this book gets you inside your dog's head and helps you figure out what they are thinking and helps you understand what this human/dog relationship is all about; respect and teamwork. Dogs need to have a job and a purpose for living. It's our job to give them that purpose, whatever it is. If you only read ONE section of the book, read about "The Walk". That has done more for our boy Juno and I than anything else. It's the easiest, most natural way to have your dog learn how to respond to you, your wishes and direction. It's not about putting massive levels of control on your pup so you can show off what Rover can do to your friends(that satisifes your ego only, does nothing for Rover). Yes, there is control. VERY strict control, but if your dog doesn't FIRST respect you, learn to respond to you, and simply isn't taught to understand what this relationship is all about, then you might as well go out and by a remote-controlled robot and save yourself the hassle. Buy the book, read and re-read each section and GO HAVE SOME FUN training your dog!
It's so easy
We have a new pointing lab puppy and I have ambitions of her being a great pointing lab. Upon the breeders suggestion I bought this book "just get Julie's book, that's all you need" was his advice. I can't say enough good things about this book, I got it when our pup was 9 weeks old and she is now 12 weeks, I have been reading (and re-reading) it every chance I get.

My pup and I have been doing "the walk" for the last few weeks, this book has inspired me to reach further and expect more from my time with my dog.

I just got a quail cage to keep in the backyard and bought several quail (from craigslist). Today I went out on the walk with my dog Scout and a couple of birds. After her introduction to the birds, based on Julie's advice, she was howling in delight wanting more. The most amazing thing to me was that as we were making our way back across the fields to the car Scout's nose was to the ground trying to sniff up more birds, it clicked. Thank you Julie!

Note: There are two books that Julie has authored, in my excitement I bought both. You only need this one. As my breeder said she has learned many things since the first book and they are in this book.

This should be a required read for any Pointing Labrador owner or any other hunting dog owner for that matter. Julie's first book was great and this one is even better. This book should be read before you even purchase a dog. It covers topics like picking out the ideal puppy, housebreaking, The Walk, and establishing the desire to hunt. If you wait until the dog is 6 months old to read this book, you're wasting precious time.
I bought a pointing lab in 2003 after reading Julie's first book. I ended up with a fantastic family dog that was very good in the field with a huge desire to hunt and retrieve. The only thing my dog lacked was a great trainer. He unfortunately passed away in May of natural causes. I'm planning on starting the adventure all over again next spring with another Pointing Labrador. This time, armed with a little more experience and even more understanding of the Pointing Labrador, thanks to this book.

In law enforcement I was a K9 handler. But You really find out what you didn't know and what you did wrong training dogs after reading this book. I can truly relate to how the author through age and experiance learned what she had done wrong by not observing and paying attention to the dogs. It is truly the best training book I have read. It was nice having it signed by the author and it is well worth the money.

Quality book that gives a great overview. The writer doesn't promote a cookie cutter approach. I have to jump around a few chapters. I would prefer if it were sequential through the lifespan of the animal.

Quick delivery. Excellent book. Signed by the author! I will let you know in a few years if the techniques paid off :) i suspect they will.
Haven't read the whole book yet so I'm still deciding how good it is, so far its been good.
