The book is written in a diary format with a series of "how tos" in boxed sections throughout the book, as well as some background knowledge of various plants and animals. I enjoyed these tidbits of info and might even have a go at a few of the recipes myself. If Nick had started off with some very explicit restrictions in the beginning, only to break them later on after finding them too difficult (and perhaps journalling any internal conflicts and reactions to these self-imposed rules), I would have had more respect for him.

Nick's biggest single expense was the £170 he spent on lengths of new timber for the foundations of his treehouse. The longest planks were bolted onto the side of the tree at a height of . m (7½ft), using five coach screws on each side, and the shorter planks were rested on top of them and also screwed into the tree.
