This highly detailed, superbly illustrated manual introduces serious model builders to the hand crafting of ship models from the bottom up, exactly as real ships were traditionally built in shipyards. Clearly, and with painstaking care, every step of construction is explained, from laying the keel to the last details of masting and rigging. For this book, the author chose as a model the 16-gun United States brig Lexington, a merchant vessel converted to military use in 1773, and a veteran of two years of active service in the Revolution. To ensure complete accuracy and to alert readers to possible problems and pitfalls along the way, the author, a naval architect and master model builder, constructed the model as he wrote the book.Photographs illustrate the day-to-day work in progress, so that ship model builders can check their work against Davis's own replica. In addition, over 100 drawings show in detail correct implementation of the more complex instructions. Do you want to know what the patterns are for nailing the planking on wooden ships? Read this book!
What are the recommended sizes for ship timbers, ribs, spars, etc? Read this book!
How long are the hand-bars on a ship's windlass? Read this book.
Where is the candle or lamp on a binnacle? Read this book
What kind of hardware is used above the waterline on wooden ships? (Iron, but read the book to understand why)
What kind of hardware is used below the waterline? Read this book and you will know!
How many openings are there on a gun port door? You will be amazed when you read this book!
Although this book was written in 1933, the author spent years working on both wooden sailing ships and on wooden freighters (Yup, he worked on building the emergency wooden freighters in WWII.) A LOT of the information he obtained from old sailors, and drew on his own experiences as a wooden ship builder to describe how things are done, why they are done that way, and what things are important.
Although this book takes you through the construction of just one built-up model, the author addresses thousands of questions regarding wooden shipbuilding, and the methods and techniques to construct them.
The information in it is absolutely INVALUABLE in model ship construction. For instance, what are the dimensions of the lines for the running and standing rigging? If you know this, you can apply the scale sizes to the proper parts of your model ship.
One last question: How could the helmsman on a sailing ship know the position of the ship's wheel in relation to the rudder? There are 2 ways, and both of them are very ingenious, very simple, and after being interested in sailing ships for over 40 years, I just found out how they do it! You can find out as well, if you read this book.

I've taken the plunge into wooden ship modeling. This is an invaluable book with tons of helpful hints from an experienced modeler. I didn't realize until I read this book that the many of the models are essentially built the same way as real ships with the same parts and in the same order of assembly.

It is an ancient book, but the understanding you gain is really useful. The bad is a ton of unexplained terms, a lack of details, and occasional unclear descriptions of what to do. There is enough additional detail of ship's parts and interior to really get you fired up.

Lots of info
Scoreboard Bleeding
good
Loni
Reasonably good, but the "language" is a bit archaic and the text does not always coincide with the closest diagram.

The book has good material. Great stuff for really experienced scratch builders.. ok.. good... but how about those who aren't experienced in all things boat building??? Many more photos that go along with the old style text would be a real service. I've let a friend who is a great ship-scratch-builder look this book over... he agrees fully! So, come on..if you are going to do something like an instructional book... make it so it easily educates. Take this from a retired teacher. It will truly make a difference.
