This book by Sam Allen makes it easy to understand, for us novice bench builders, how the whole thing comes . This is an excellent book for learning all of the parts that go into a workbench. There are even some workbench plans for tops, bases, and vises in the book.

This book by Sam Allen makes it easy to understand, for us novice bench builders, how the whole thing comes together. Just one blow up diagram of his, instantly explains, how each section, from the top, the front edge, the tool tray, legs etc, all come together. Until now benches appeared to me to be made up from a lot of 4 inch stock. Although there could be more plans, there is enough information in the book to take one of their plans and adapt it for your own bench.

This book, unlike the others, gives you a step by step description of how to assemble the bench. I have some other books, and they go into the different types of benches very well. They also have some blueprints for specs of the different types. Not so, only certain areas are. Anyhow, this is a great book to get in your quest for the ultimate bench, and the price is wonderful for something so well illustrated. Buy it you won't be sorry.

WB's are like personal computers. Have you ever used someone else's peculiarly selected PC customizations? It's called a personal computer I think because it is.

The great WB takes like years of pondering and then you build it. This book plus others have helped me morph my WB into my own Ferrari. Here's how I finally proceeded:

You have to start with the chassis. I transferred my notions from various sawhorse and table configurations to the one I built. I desired portable + heavy. The `chassis' was a Sam's club inspiration. For $99 I bought the 6', 2" thick maple topped, steel legged work bench. I bought 4 heavy duty down lock, up lift casters. I framed the steel legs of the bench with mortised oak 4x4's and attached the casters to the 4x4 frame. The unit rolls easily and when down locked/uplifted the 300# bench is completely stable on the down locked legs.

I could not see the need for the lower cabinet. 360 degree access was more important. I turned the lower steel frame cross member of the bench into a big piece-stock storage shelf. I can add another full length if I ever want to. I added a tier of tool access custom oak cubbies below the top and length wise on one side.

Quick action vises are critical to preclude cranking. I first built in one twin screw end vise as typical, and then added an e-bay 1920's forged 1.5" screw end vice that has two 1.5" steel bar guides. It's more stable than the double screw end vice. The two end vises extend to effectively create an 8' bench. Then I collected side vises from e-bay auctions and got some great old ones that are far superior to new ones (an old Record side vise, an old Record patternmaker vise, a side vise with a date well over 100 years old that's the best of the lot and most recently an old black smith-bench mount hip vise ... you can never enough vises).

The planing/ hold fast stop block options are users choice. I top bored the pattern for the standard shepherd's hook.

So based on this book and other idea books, I have the perfect bench ... for me ... that stows anywhere. Err on the side of over built ... one or 2 up bolts & screws. Structural rigidity is critical.

I decided to get a copy of this book after growing tired of my old wobbly lightweight workbench. The instructions on making a cabinetmaker's bench was thorough and easy to follow (except for the shoulder vise)and made my own modifications to the plan. The result is a rack-free heavyweight that looks just as good as any other benches posted on the web. The book allows you to use your imagination in customizing your own workbench (I made mine larger and added drawers underneath). I purchased the tail and front vise from lee valley and used white Ash for the top. Highly recommended book!

It is a good review of workbenches with lots of information to digest. Don't buy this if you are only looking for plans but it is great for getting ideas on what you want to do for your workbench, or modifications you may want to add to the one you already have.

I was surprised that it was not in color...that was a disappointment. Plus, there are limited pictures and tons of text. I prefer short and concise directions with pictures.

This is an excellent book for learning all of the parts that go into a workbench. There are even some workbench plans for tops, bases, and vises in the book. Although there could be more plans, there is enough information in the book to take one of their plans and adapt it for your own bench. Many different benches, tops, bases, and vises are discussed and pros and cons are given for each. If you are just setting up a shop or are tired of your old workbench and want to save some money by making your own, this is definitely the book for you.

Excellent book on woodworking workbenches; Clear easily readable text for older eyes, all color pictures, instructions complete and very specific. In addition to the workbench construction and plans, there is much great info on woodworking techniques and optional construction methods. For $10.17, this book is a great value and I would recommend it for any beginning woodworker.
I had checked this book out of the public library and was sufficiently impressed to add it to my book on wood working for future reference. It has instructions for building several excellent workbenches and useful accessories. Unlike other books on this topic, it is not a history of workbenches; rather, it shows you how. It includes plans for simple to professional benches.
