The two architects, interior and furniture designers Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine were chosen by Napoleon Bonaparte and his first wife Josephine as Emperor and Empress to design a new style in which new architecture, interiors and furniture pieces were created in the beautiful chateaux and hotels of France which were languishing after the French Revolution. This book is essential in understanding the Empire period in France. The two architects, interior and furniture designers Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine were chosen by Napoleon Bonaparte and his first wife Josephine as Emperor and Empress to design a new style in which new architecture, interiors and furniture pieces were created in the beautiful chateaux and hotels of France which were languishing after the French Revolution. The 72 plates from the Percier and Fontaine book "Recueil de decorations interieures" gives insight into the Neoclassical look of the period. Many of the plates were from designs actually brought to fruition by this amazing design team. This is obviously not for design tips on designing your own home unless you have a lavish budget but gives great insight into just what the interiors and furniture of the Empire period were all about. French design of that time influenced the English Regency period and the American Federal period as well. This book is a quality trade paperback Dover Publication and is out of print. Excellent resource!

The authors, who lived from the 1760s `til the mid-1800s, met in or after art school, and created what came to be known as the First Empire Style of design. It's described as neoclassical, influenced by Greek, Roman, and most especially Egyptian elements. The book covers the gamut of design elements, from elegant chandeliers to whole room treatments. After a brief introduction to the Dover edition, and an essay by the authors, the book is all line drawings with explanatory notes at the end.

There's nothing here that would be useful in anything smaller than a palace, and only then if you would be comfortable living on a movie set from an early talkie version of Cleopatra. If you like to use Empire style elements in your furniture design - which is why I bought the book - this won't help you. The target audience here would be a small niche of historical architecture buffs or museum staffs.
