We bought an old house with an old yard, which needs some work. I bought this book to try to get some ideas for new plants.

This book is nothing short of beautiful. The book is sectioned into chapters according to type of plant, such as trees, ground covers, roses, shrubs. There are color headers for each section, such as purple for flowers, which helps to locate things in a hurry.

Each tree or plant has a page with a color photo and details, such as size, planting and watering guides, tips and similar recommendations. It is very thorough.

There are also chapters on butterfly gardening, deer problems, and pest remedies.

This is a very good guide for anyone living in the Rocky Mountain region.

Very nice book. What's there is great:

-Arranged will by type of plant.
-Each page has nice photo, info is split up well in sections including useful sections like season of interest, zone info, bloom color, size.

Fun to browse thru and useful as reference.

My only complaint is what's NOT there. It has way too few plant entries in each section.

Great book for gardeners new to the West. Many specific ideas of how to garden at high altitudes. Really like the format of providing month-by-month specific instructions to garden groups like shrubs, perienials and annuals to name a few. I found this book a very helpful addition to my gardening library.

THE best book on gardening in an area that isn't easy to grow stuff. The month-by-month guide is great! I've given this book as a gift three times as I can't part with my own copy. Besides it's marked up and has gotten wet and dirty from being outside and read a lot. GREAT book!

I love the month-by-month format. I like that he makes suggestions for each category (annuals, perennials, shrubs, etc.) of plants that do well in our region. However, I WISH that the suggestion-sections had photos of the plants he's suggesting. There are no photos in this book at all. Most of the book doesn't need them, but when he's talking about how muscari and narcissus look good together (or whatever else), it would be nice to be able to see it for myself instead of having to go on the internet to look them up.

Also, he arranges it by plant type first, THEN by month, so to see what you should do in March, you need to go to the "March" section for each plant type. If he were to do another edition I'd suggest that he organize it by Month first, and then have a short section for each plant type within the month.

Despite those possible improvements, I'm very glad I bought the book and will be using it.

I got this book for my wife. When It arrived the cover is bent and all of the pages show signs of water damage.. not happy with how the book arrived.

John Cretti knows his stuff. I just wish he was still on the air here in Denver on his Saturday morning talk show Gardening and Living with an Altitude on 630 KHOW. I loved it. Great book, great info.
I was at a greenhouse buying plants for zone 4 area; a lady told me if I was new to the area to purchase this book....It is a must if you live in Zone 4......Love it....Thanks....
