Fans of Cannelle et Vanille, those with gluten allergies, and cookbook enthusiasts looking for something new and special will all be attracted to this breathtaking book. Gluten-free cooking and many other something-free styles of cooking tend to have a bit of a bad reputation in the eyes of the uninitiated, perhaps due to fear that by removing 'something' the food must be naturally boring, tasteless and just not the same. A bit like how vegetarianism has been treated (and still treated in many quarters). A fear of the unknown. Ignorance if you will.

This book is a real gem for anyone who likes to cook, not just those who follow a gluten-free diet (which I don't). It is beautifully photographed, well organized and the recipes are easy to follow. Just looking at it makes me want to race to the kitchen and start cooking/baking. The ingredients can sometimes be on the exotic side but there are plenty of recipes with more widely available ingredients and for the more unique ones the author often suggests substitutes. I like that all the ingredients are listed in both volume and weight measurements. As to the recipes themselves, I have made about a half dozen things and they have all been delicious. Salmon cakes with pea shoot mayonnaise and the beet, chocolate and almond butter molten cakes received rave reviews from friends and family. Can't wait to try more of Aran's recipes!

Great book with some incredible recipes, only problem is the prohibitive cost of the ingredients. As someone who cooks GF (fiance is celiac), I'm very accustomed to the increased cost of ingredients for most GF recipes, but the breadth of different specialty ingredients used in this cookbook though makes it very expensive to actually cook a lot of recipes.

However as GF recipes go, I don't know that I've ever read a better cookbook. The author's pastry background and GF cooking practices makes for some desert recipes especially that come out so fantastically tasty and well-textured you'd be shocked they didn't come from a professional bakery.

I wanted to love this book, but the recipes are fussy and labor-intensive. They have long ingredient lists and some require what I would consider advanced skill (or copious free time). I can't spend 3 hours in the kitchen to create one appetizer. But the recipes I have made--roasted cauliflower leek soup, garlic soup, "everything cookies"--turned out really delicious.

Even if I've known Aran's beautiful blog ( Cannelle et Vanille ) for quite some time now, her first book, Small Plates and Sweet Treats, left me amazed nonetheless: beautifully written, in the kind-hearted way and with that sweet hint of nostalgia that are a lovely part of Aran's style, with beautiful, bright and mouth-watering photos and delicious recipes, you will find yourself dreaming about the smell of spices and cozy soups even if you're not gluten-free.
The book is very easy-going and practical, being divided into seasons, and each season featuring a savoury section ( small plates, or pintxos as they call them in the basque country from where Aran comes from ), and a sweet one ( sweet treats ), with 15 delicious recipes per section. They are all homey, easy to reproduce ( and of course to adapt if you're not gluten-free: I am not in fact, and I've tried some from her book and her blog also, and they were always a success ), often times dairy-free also, which is a good thing too, and of course, beautiful; and, as a bonus, the book features Aran's own tips to substitute some ingredients ( or to try new ones ), manage through the challenging but full of possibilities world of gluten-freen cooking and baking ( the book features recipes for bread and brioche also, which for one on a gluten-free diet is a hit to say the least ), to make things such chestnut flour, or chicken stock, or nuts butter at home, to help you on your way through the book and through a more healthful, satisfying and relaxed way to cook.

As I finish putting away all the holiday decorations, I was so excited to finally sit and read my latest cookbook purchase, Small Plates and Sweet Treats by Aran Goyoaga. I love reading cookbooks! I was ecstatic when I stumbled upon Aran's blog cannelle et vanille after searching through hundreds for "the one" blog that might capture my heart. Aran's did in every way possible! First with her photography and then her recipes and stories! The bonus~ she had a cookbook that I immediately purchased.

Small Plates and Sweet Treats is a feast for our eyes and our bellies! Aran captures our hearts with her inspiring stories, yummy anecdotes, and exquisite photography. I am a total fan of her simple seasonal whole food and small portioned recipes that make even the novice feel eager to prepare. I loved that there's a photograph for each recipe! I'm excited to dive in and try the many pages I've dogeared, especially the roasted garlic, celery root saffron soup with curried shrimp, oh my! My entire family of 6 is gluten intolerant and her expertise in baking brings me great confidence that I too will be able to recreate her delicious looking creations. Thank you Aran, I'm so happy to have found you and your wonderful book! Peggy

I was first introduced to Aran through blogging in early 2008. I was instantly smitten with her recipes and writing, not to mention her beautiful photography. Right about the time she was making the switch to gluten-free, I was too. I was grateful for her fabulous recipes to help ease my way into gluten-free living. I love the way Aran combines seasonal, fresh ingredients in her recipes. I keep wanting to say how sophisticated they are, but that's not really the right word. Her small plates and sweet treats are simple and highlight the ingredients, and are beautiful works of art all at the same time. Consistently her recipes turn out perfectly. It's a dream come true to have her cookbook on my shelf. It's truly gorgeous. Even if you aren't gluten-free, you'll want to pick it up immediately! I want to buy a copy for everyone I know.

I'm giving this cookbook 4 stars because it has spectacular bread recipes that include banana bread, brioche and seeded bread. But, many of the recipes have too many steps and a few don't taste very good. Many recipes in this cookbook aren't the everyday cooking/baking type. You may need to hunt for some ingredients.
