The combination of a difficult delivery and inept medical care resulted in Mary Wollstonecraft's death less than two weeks after her daughter's birth. Thus, Mary was never to know her mother in person, although the memory and reputation of Mary Wollstonecraft was one of the dominating influences on her life. Her father was a distant man at best and he never completely forgave his daughter for causing his wife's death.
