Black Panther is not a character I read a whole lot of. In fact, I believe the last Black Panther book I read was when the title was last re-launched. That book - Black Panther: Who Is The Black Panther HC - was a pretty good read with cool artwork from JRJR. Now, years later, the book is being re-launched again and taken is a different sort of direction. What is this new direction? A single glance at the cover of the book will answer that question. The new Black Panther is female instead of male.

Without giving too much away, I will say that everyone's favorite African ruler (T'Challa, aka Black Panther) is involved in an assassination attempt and is unable to act as Black Panther at a time when his country needs him, so another member of his family steps up to the challenge. At the same time, his wife (Storm of the X-Men) attempts to sacrifice her own life in exchange for his.

The story is pretty interesting, with plenty of family tension and other emotions. A few well-know villains are involved in the storyline, including Dr. Doom, Man-Ape, and Morlun. A couple of key characters meet their demise, and a new legend is born. Overall, it was a pretty impressive story, so kudos to Mr. Hudlin.

Artwork on the book is pretty good, as well. I really wasn't familiar with the artist on this book, Ken Lashley. I'd describe his style as a bit of a mix between Ron Garney and Mike Deodato, which is to say pretty darn good. Inks on the book are appropriately dark and foreboding and the colors by Paul Mounts are superb. It all adds up to a very nicely illustrated book.

While I still can't say that this character is one of my favorites in the Marvel stable, I did enjoy this book and I would think most other Marvel fans will, as well, and surely fans of the character will enjoy it.
