Carlson and Shield began their collaboration with For the Love of God (1990). Here they've joined forces and invited a number of spiritually inclined (and quite a few best-selling) authors to contribute essays about the nourishment of the soul. In their introduction, Carlson and Shield discuss the fact that everyone craves spiritual sustenance no matter what their religious orientation may be. Indeed, the very concept of soul means different things to different people, and this diversity is reflected in the volume's assortment of viewpoints and experiences.

One of the most profound needs of our age, when so many violent conflicts are based on perceived religious differences, is to affirm the common ground of organized religion and personal spirituality. In this accessible collection, 25 of the world's foremost spiritual thinkers -- Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, Sue Bender, Matthew Fox, Shakti Gawain, Rabbi Harold Kushner, among others -- describe their concepts of spirituality and universal wisdom.

I loved this book! For whomever is willing to walk a spiritual path this book is a delight to read. Different authors share with us their ideas about God, the divine, spirituality and life, as well as their experiences while searching for truth. I really think the planet would be a better place if we humans make an effort in becoming more loving, more free, more humble, more compassionate, more caring, and less arrogant, less intolerant, less judgemental. This book contains some guidelines to achieve this, or at least try to do so.

It was very interesting to read such a variety of philosophies and approaches to spirituality. I'm looking forward to read some of the books of these people. And I'm sure I'll reread some parts of this book often.

This is a beautiful and inspiring book-for people of all faiths or those without. I have given it to friends and family and keep copies in my waiting room that never last long - they are intended to be taken. Everyone comments positivly including teens. It doesnot proselytize a religion but provides beauty for the spirit.

Loved the book and the information contained in it. Each writers central theme spoke to me in ways I would not have imagined. It opened me up to an awakening with God and my relationship with others, nature and animals. I see them differently now and it has made me a better person and I now have a better response to the spirit within me and a special attitude to life. I keep this close to my heart and I will keep on working to make the changes in my thinking. It has awoken me to realize just how much the mind can deceive you and how we all need to stay true to our hearts and the love that dwells within us, it is extremely important for us all to channel into this love and express it in our daily attitudes with all things, for God is all and everything. This book has been an absolute blessing to me and I will be re reading it continuously.

Wonderful book for understanding well-known people's relationship with God. It is also a good source for figuring out how to develop one's own relationship with a higher power.
The contributors discuss what their childhood religious background was like, how it "evolved" and how it has changed.
The book brought up the question-Does it take a tragedy to bring a person closer to God?- and others to contemplate about "human nature." Meditation, prayer and contemplation are the most often suggested methods for developing a relationship with God.
Our "retreat" will be using this as our basic text. I think that the way it is "organized" can lead to many interesting, spiritual discussions.
