Indigenous churches are churches suited to local culture and led by local Christians. There have been two main Protestant strategies proposed for the creation of indigenous churches: Indigenization: Foreign missionaries create well-organized churches and then hand them over to local converts. The foreign mission is generally seen as a scaffolding which must be removed once the fellowship of believers is functioning properly.

Reviews about The Indigenous Church and the Indigenous Church and the Missionary (7):

I read the first volume, written about 50 years ago. While I would have some differences in theology and approach, Hodges has written a classic! Rereading this book was very helpful to me personally when I was looking at the time to finalize turning our ministry over to nationals and return to the USA.

I sat under Melvin Hodges in the early 80's. The earlier addition was my textbook. It still is the book that I remember the most from all my post graduate students. Ordering to train.

Melvin Hodges is one of the most significant leaders that helped shape my missiology. I never got to meet him, but through this book and some audio files I have grown tremendously. Practical experiences in North America, the Middle East, South Pacific and South Asia have all affirmed the principles in this book. For any mission leader wanting to know how to be a part of a sustainable mission model, this book is a priority. It is immensely practical, insightful (even though written decades ago) and very easy to read/comprehend.

I enjoyed the read, although I don't agree with everything I read.
Any church planter should defiantly consult this book, old or new.

Must read for those who plan to serve on the field.

A must-read for every missionary church planter!

This particular book is actually two books in one volume. Melvin Hodges wrote the original book "The Indigenous Church" in 1953. The book has been revised twice. The second book "The Indigenous Church And The Missionary" was copyrighted in 1978.

These books are easy to read and very practical! Some may consider the information and methods to be outdated. However, I believe this volume to be a valuable timeless resource to every cross-cultural missionary who partners with local indigenous churches or intends to plant local indigenous churches. It is well worth a second and third reading.
Used it in mentoring a fellowship of Christian Churches in the Philippines and for leading them in an understanding about what being indidgenous is and isn't and how being indigenous builds their vision, congregational involvement, and all aspects of church government and ministry.
