Ted Dekker (born October 24, 1962) is an American author of mystery, thriller, and fantasy novels including Thr3e, Obsessed, and the Circle Series. Dekker graduated from high school and took up permanent residence in the United States to study philosophy and religion. In the early nineties Dekker turned to writing novels. Over the course of three years he wrote two full-length novels before starting from scratch and rewriting both.

Rendered famous for his anti-religion stance, FBI behavioral psychologist Daniel Clark has a near-death experience when a mysterious serial killer attempts to murder him, an event that forces Daniel to re-create his death and challenge his belief system in order to identify his would-be killer. After reading Boneman's Daughters and being very disappointed, I almost gave up on Ted Dekker. However, someone told me to give Adam a try, and I'm glad I did. This book was suspenseful, with a solid storyline. I finished it in a couple of days, which says a lot about how engaging it was.

The protagonist, Daniel Clark, is an FBI agent trying to catch a serial killer known as Eve. Eve has taken 16 girls over the past few years, and the FBI have been unsuccessful in hunting him down. Daniel thinks he has a chance if he is allowed to "go dark." He is paired with a pathologist, Lori Ames, who knows the case well and seems to complement Daniel's style of investigation. Daniel's supervisor allows the two to "go dark" and thus begins a deadly game of cat and mouse. Daniel's ex-wife, Heather, becomes involved, complicating the search and compromising Daniel's objectivity. The ending was very suspenseful, and contained one of Dekker's trademark twists.

I felt satisfied after closing the book, which is something I could not say after Boneman's Daughters. If anything was lacking, I would say it was character building. I did not feel particularly connected to any of the characters, despite the fact that the book is told from multiple points of view (Daniel, Heather, and Lori).
The over riding theme in this novel seems to be the nature of evil. It is a fascinating topic, and I thought Dekker did a fine job at really delving into this subject matter.
Objectionable content: There were no instances of profanity that I can remember. No sexual scenes. Violence is present within this book, but is expected given the subject matter.
I do have to add that I think Dekker has felt increasing pressure to use profanity in his novels (see Editorial Review on main product page), and I'm glad he didn't succumb to that pressure in this novel. I think he pulls it off just fine. Eve comes off as sadistic and creepy without having to pepper the pages with expletives. Unfortunately, Dekker does succumb to the pressure to use profanity in Boneman's Daughters. I think he should ignore the editorial reviews and focus on what his readers are saying, but that's just my humble opinion.

Conclusion: Dekker knows how to write suspenseful thrillers. If you are looking for a book that will make you think AND entertain you at the same time, you won't go wrong with this one.

The book would seem to be a somewhat dry procedural thriller were it not for the combo flashback/forward articles that space out the chapters. That is, up untilit takes it's extreme supernatural turn in the last quarter of the book.
I found it slogging at first (just cruising through the dry FBI procedures to get to the next article about the killer's history) and in fact just didn't like the protagonist enough to care about him putting his career on the line or getting shot...but once the twist occurs it really grabbed me and is making me lookinto moreof Dekker's work.

Ted Dekker is one of my favorite authors and Adam is one of many of his books that I am glad to add to my collection! Dark, and intense, this book will keep you at the edge of your seat until the end! And for any lovers of thriller or Ted Dekker books, I recommend his novel THR3E! A masterpiece among novels
Book arrived with very minor wear, almost perfect!

I read this on recommendation from a friend and it was amazing! Literally one of the most intense books I've ever read. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I'm a huge reader and fairly widely read, so this review is pretty unusual. I would say that for anyone who does not like thriller type stories, this may be a little too intense. However, I loved it and will definitely read again. Probably the most intense of the Dekker books, but one of his best! The Christian worldview added to the appeal of the book for me.

So,

I was looking for scary novels to read during the Halloween season and picked Adam from the most popular list.

I have to say, although I enjoyed the read, this was not as scary as I was expecting. Perhaps I have unrealistic expectations, but I was looking for a book that would scare the crap out of me -because I don't scare easily- and this didn't quite hit the mark. At times the writing felt as though it was babying me too much, as there were two instances where a line said

"A beat."

All cons aside, this was a really engaging and fun book to read. I got really invested in the serial killer character and even though I was able to predict "the big reveal" from page 10, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this. I kept wanting to read more and more and hated when I had to put it down, but it was definitely an excellent read by far.
