I have avoided writing a review on this book for a long time simply because I have not known how to put into words all the feelings that I have about this book. I will simply say that this is one of the best books I have ever read. At first I was not sure it was for me. The dialogue moves a bit slowly in the beginning as the author develops the characters. There is also a well-developed plot, mystery, history, and romance. However, to characterize this book as genre fiction does not do it justice. The amazing thing about this book is how the author explores deep philosophical and spiritual issues beneath the character's thoughts, conversations, and events of the book. Thus, I would give it the honor of literary fiction.

This is a book that will stay with you long after you finish it.

I read most of my novels in Kindle format, but this is one (of the few) I have ordered in paperback for my permanent library.

This is absolutely one of my favorite books of all time. I won't give a synopsis, since plenty of other reviewers have done that, but let me just urge you to read this book. Well-written, captivating, and I loved the characters so much. They became like close friends, or family, or even part of me. They were "real," they didn't have everything figured out, they didn't gloss over struggles with Pollyanna faith. They questioned. They got angry. They struggled with forgiveness and with moving forward after difficult things. And, as with "real life" people, they grew in their faith by the Two Steps Forward, One Step Back method most of us can relate to. So I highly recommend this book -- interesting plot, wonderful characters, and very "real." I can't imagine you won't fall in love with it and be as sad as I was when it was finished.

Elizabeth Musser writes of a teenager who suddenly finds himself in Atlanta Ga after having been born and living in France with his mother and father. It is a wonderful story full of subplots in France involving his French grandmother, father and American mother beginning in WWII German occupied France. His story begins in Atlanta in the 1960's with just his mother and American grandmother and follows him as he learns to live in a foreign high school with bullies, African-Americans, Hispanics and the poor. The loss of his father and then his best friend, Eternity, and an introduction to faith as he gets to know his grandmother's story, continues to weave through his education time in Atlanta, college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and teaching in a college. It is a wonderful story that provides an incredible glimpse of history in different times as well the growth of a faith that sustains.

I was so inspired by the spirituality woven into the story. I also enjoyed the historical aspect and learned things I had not known before. I enthusiastically recommend this book.

I loved this book which is very well written and which tells the story of several generation effected by the events and horrors surrounding the second world war. It includes stories of bravery beyond our imaginations. It also has stories of faith woven throughout. I cannot recommend highly enough. Please don't hesitate to download but do be prepared for some late into the night reading. Loved it well done Elizabeth Musser. Off to search for more books by this writer. Thanks

So many of the evils man does to others are an imbedded part of life...why is this the case? Should we be surprised with the results when we choose rebellion over obedience? Surely God asks us in so many ways "how's that working for you?" It is painful...it hurts...and there is redemption if we go back to Him. E. Musser's story is graphic without using too many words. She plays with the readers emotions while twisting a story of tragedy and triumph. There were times I had to put it down, so hard was the scene. And I thank her for pointing me back to God in such touching and meaningful ways.
As a social worker, this book hit me so hard. I could not believe the realities she described in her fiction. She described the harsh realities of physical and sexual abuse. The painful lives she painted were hard to read about, but she kept descriptions to a minimum, which I thought was great. I know what she is saying without having to really say it. She uses one or two words that describe a whole paragraph about the lives of Eternity and her siblings. I love Emile and his role in the book, how he tries to save Eternity and he succeeds to some degree, but only God can save. Both Emile and Eternity find that out, as with all her books that only God can truly save, rescue and redeem. I love that about all her books, they leave me asking what have i learned and how can i be a better mother, lover, friend, Christian after reading this book. Bel Tucker,
