Suzanne Woods Fisher is an excellent writer. I have read and enjoyed several of her books, and liked this one very much. This is an historical novel about a ficitonal German resistance worker who under the alias Louisa Schmetterling was smuggled out of Germany to the United States during WWII. A good read solidly based in the facts of WWII and with the added touch of real-life German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer who actually planned to assassinate Hitler as one of the off-stage characters. When Pastor Robert Gordon told his seminary friend, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, that he would accept a German refugee, he had no idea what he was getting into. Robert, and his Aunt Martha expected a man and are knocked off balance to find Louisa instead of Louis is the German refugee coming to stay in their home. Aunt Martha is tough as nails and not at all happy to be housing a German Jew in her home. (Note that it is actually Louisa's father who is Jewish.) She is talkative, and inquisitive, and they are people of few words who avoid issues which simmer in the background waiting to boil over. As stubborn Louisa sets about trying to break into William's silent world, she causes changes neither Robert nor Aunt Martha are ready for. Having listened to many good sermons by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and others, she is critical of Robert's flat sermons. And lurking in the back of her mind is an uneasiness about a German church member who may or may not be a Nazi and may or may not be related to a dangerous man in Berlin. Her outspokenness regarding her hatred of the Nazis, her knowledge of things in Germany, and her relationship with friend Dietrich Bonhoeffer--still in Germany and under arrest-- may be attracting attention that may endanger her life and his. To add to the mix, Louisa who wants nothing more than to return to Germany and Robert who has been deeply hurt by his former wife may be reluctantly falling in love. And the best thing is that there is sequel, The Copper Fire. So when you reach the end of this book, you can get Copper Fire and read another great story about these wonderful characters.

This is the 5th of Suzanne Woods Fisher's novels that I've read recently, and, unlike the others, is not about the Amish. I have found all of them to be entertaining, well-plotted, and with characters you like (mostly). This is set in the last few years of World War II. It uses one real person (Dietrich Bonhoeffer), as the reason the story gets started, and he is a recurring character in the story, though only in conversations about him. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

The good people of Copper Springs stay with you long after the final page of the book is closed. Louisa, the beautiful emerging butterfly within all of us, bumbling and headstrong at first, but willing to submit to the Master's gentle molding of her life into a woman of faith and strength. Robert, the wounded and tentative, afraid to love again. Little William, who unabashedly acts on his feelings, learning to reach out for the mother's love he desperately needs. Aunt Martha, representing the difficult person in everyone's life. And even wicked Friedrich Mueller, the epitome of the dark forces of spiritual warfare, waging a battle that has already been won by the forces of Light!

I'm anxiously awaiting the sequel, Ms. Fisher. Keep the great stories coming!

Suzanne Woods Fisher is an amazing author. Her ability to develop the characters in her novels is exceptional. I will be looking for more of her works in the future. She is probably one of the best, if not the best, author of romance intertwined with history that I have had the privilege of reading.

I got this book free on Bookbub and never put it down. The author has a way of drawing you in to the story, describing places and events so that you can visualize. The story line was very real, historical. I would definitely recommend this book.

very good series
A wonderful Historical Novel. It was so well written and kept my interest until the very end. I always enjoy stories about the war and what went on in Germany & other countries against the Jews. The evil attrocities of Hitler & his followers were terrible. But enjoyed the intrigue of the story and the interesting history about Dietrich Bonhoffer and the coming together and the bonding of the parsonage 'family'.. I really loved reading this story!
