A collection of true life stories written by Guideposts Editor-in-Chief. Promise of Hope will encourage you in your walk of faith. Edward Grinnan masterfully blends several stories interspersed with a personal account of his own journey to faith. Each story that is shared has hardships that are overcome by ordinary people. Grinnan's story, as well, keeps us wondering when he will finally come to face the truth of his own spiritual need. When the moment comes, it is compelling and makes us realize how close life and death sometimes are, when life is spiraling down and miracles are needed. It came down to such a moment for him. In this book, we see a mother's love that sustains, continues and never gives up. We see the pain of a mysterious death. We see the hurt and denial caused by addiction. We also see the the dullness of pain and the sense of a person being lost to their own self. I am glad for this narrative. It shares the human condition in an up close and personal way. We are walking Grinnan's journey with him, and parts of it ain't very pretty. Particularly touching (to me) was Grinnan's account of his lost love. Somehow I could relate to his sense of loss and longing and her sense of the need to move on with life. That is a very real experience that relates to many of our painful pasts. Most of all, I found myself encouraged by the evidence that God still calls the prodigal home. In doing so, He meets people where they're at and makes them into people they never dreamed they would end up being; better, fulfilled, and grateful.

I read Guideposts and was very interested in this book when I recently found out about it, so I ordered the Audiobook from Amazon Marketplace. I've finished listening to it and really liked it. I'd thought I would sell it after I listened to it, but now I think I will keep it to listen to it again after a period of time. The book is somewhat like Guideposts, with stories, in particular the authors, so it was very interesting. Here is an excerpt from the end of the book that I liked and wrote down: "Stories can hold such valuable life lessons and wisdom for us. I’ve used stories to demonstrate the power of human beings to change the most difficult things about their lives and themselves; to face adversity and emerge stronger, more faith-filled, people for it."

I am a fan of Guideposts and love sappy stories....and that was what I was expecting to read about. Instead, I uncovered a much more beautiful and nuanced story: that of Mr. Grinnan himself. I literally could not put this book down and about the only criticism I can offer is that I was so much more interested in HIS story that I found myself impatiently skipping past the other stuff. I almost wish the author had focused strictly on his journey because I still cannot reconcile how he went from those incredible lows to who is he is today. I think there is another book there waiting to be written.

Having read other accounts of the perils of addiction, I was also surprised to find something rather fresh.... The story about his relapse was nothing short of heartbreaking, maddening and just plain old riveting.....

Mr.Grinnan: IF you are reading this, please consider a second retelling of this story as a memoir and finish telling us what happened to you that brought you to where you are today. You have a lot to offer with this beautiful and inspiring account of redemption.

As a long-time reader of Guideposts, I was delighted when the Editor-in-Chief, Edward Grinnan, published this book of his own experiences--it is authentically inspiring. The full title is long quite long, but it is also very descriptive.

The book is a genuine witness; Mr. Grinnan takes his own life story and intertwines it with some Guideposts and other stories of those he has met along the course of his life. His life story alone is an amazing miracle of faith in action. It is not pretty--he went through some incredibly difficult times. Though he hit rock bottom in a way that most of us never will, he learned from this process and grew through faith into the incredible person he is now.

The Promise of Hope is beautifully written. While it was difficult to put it down, when I had to it was very easy to pick up and transform myself directly back into the story. The words are easy to read, but the narrative contains many anecdotes and parables that require a great deal of pondering. It is the type of book which I will read many times, discovering new ideas each time. Like others, I would like to have Mr. Grinnan write another book to "flesh out" the remainder of his story, telling us more about how he got from "there" to "here."

The "9 Keys to Positive Personal Change" were seamlessly assimilated into the book without sounding at all "preachy". The chapters are honesty, willingness, imagination, commitment, faith, forgiveness, acceptance, resilience, and love. Though each of these topics was a separate chapter with impressive explanations, they were at the same time smoothly integrated into the writing style of the entire book--relaxed, easy to read, and at the same time intense.

It was hard to put this book down. Someday I would love to have the honor of meeting this incredible man and giving him a hug.

Book arrived in very good condition, as advertised. I feel I can trust this seller and recommend them to others. Also, this is a very good book to read, for many reasons. I have known people, including family members, who have had addictions, and it is always a struggle for everyone involved. Edward's story tells it honestly, yet emphasizes that there is hope for everyone, especially when the problem is acknowledged, and someone keeps trying to get the person to make the necessary changes to overcome the addiction.
