It's not a typical book, but one for thinking Christians that understand that faith isn't always easy, but trusting and discerning God's will is an ongoing venture. It was different than most books on God's will and the process the author reveals is very thought provoking and it made a lot of sense to me. I have some decision coming up and while I'm not ready to make those decisions yet, this book is helping me with the process.

In our Christian walks, many of us struggle with doubt. Any time we are faced with a decision, a fork in the road, we wonder whether we're making the choice God would have us make, or if we're merely pursuing our own will.

In Direction, Cheri Cowell lays out a deceptively simple plan for evaluating our decisions in the light of biblical truth. Each of her points is backed up by examples from scripture.

A critical factor in this book -- one Cowell tackles right away -- is the misconception that if the way is clear, that must be God's will. Not necessarily, she says. She calls "The Path of Relative Ease" a myth. To sum her point up in my own words, the path of least resistance is a Zen concept, not a Christian one. As Cowell demonstrates from the book of Job, obstacles may come precisely *because* we are doing God's will.

Cowell has a clear, personable writing style. There is no fluff in this book. It is concise and comprehensive. I used it to teach a very advanced class of adult learners, and they all got something new from it. I highly recommend this book for individual or group study.

Many times, it's easy to discern a good choice from a bad one. But when neither option is bad or wrong, how does one know which path to choose? While most of us would prefer the proverbial "handwriting on the wall" to show us the way, that kind of unmistakable message from God is rare. But according to Cowell's book, that's OK. We don't need it. In fact, instead of trying to guess what God's will is, she writes, we should instead focus on discerning His "way." When we know God's way, we'll be better able to choose our own.

Direction is not a Ouija board which will magically point you to your next move. It equips the reader with the right questions, the right tools to evaluate the possibilities on his or her own. Cowell also wisely devotes a chapter to "Obstacles to Hearing from God." Drawing on personal experiences, real-life stories from others, the Word of God and the wisdom of classic theologians, Cowell explores decision-making at a fundamental level. I found her insights to be thoroughly based in Scripture and very balanced.

Cowell adds even more value to her already solid book by including several helpful appendices and group study questions for each chapter, making this well-suited for small group or individual use, and appropriate for every stage of life.

I needed this book! As one who is constantly second-guessing myself as to God's good, pleasing, and perfect will, I found direction within its pages. Instead of simply telling me what to do, Cheri Cowell leads me in the steps to drawing closer to God and knowing Him more intimately--which then allow me to hear His voice. The chapter on "Obstacles to Hearing from God" was especially helpful by pointing out the stumbling blocks in my own life that prevent me from discerning His will. I look forward seeing results as I continue to apply the prinicples within this book!

I've been asked by discouraged people why an "open door" turned out to be disastrous, or what to do when there's no clear answer on what to do. Cheri Cowell takes those questions and invites the reader to discover what Scripture says about finding direction. It's not a typical book, but one for thinking Christians that understand that faith isn't always easy, but trusting and discerning God's will is an ongoing venture. Highly recommended.

"This is one of, if not, the best inspirational book I have ever read, it puts into perspective, how God intends for us to communine with Him.
How He desires for us to return to the creatures He created us to be, before the fall of Adam and Eve.
I have had the influence of the Nazarene Doctrine, in my life since birth, and never have I heard the areas covered in this book, described so easy to understand.
