A Christian perspective on interculturalism and what it means to "love thy neighbor." Smith introduces concepts in the context of biblical verses you may (or may not!) have read/known about before. Frankly, I think this book is worth a read outside the context of intercultural studies. While there's no on-the-nose advice, Smith gives you a lot of food for thought. If you pray for an open mind and heart when reading, or if you simply want to read and aren't "religious" it can be such a fascinating read. Would love an audio book.

When I adopted this for the undergraduate course I offer for prospective teachers, I feared it might be too basic in its discussion of culture, or too peripheral to the concerns of future educators. All 26 of my students, however, rated it favorably this fall--several suggesting that in the future, I use it at the beginning of the course rather than the end. Strengths include memorable personal anecdotes, insightful discussion of selected passages of scripture, and an engaging style of narrative/exposition. An excellent resource for students and faculty to discuss prior to coursework or mission projects overseas.

Fantastic book - illustrates how a fundamentalist approach can lead to misinterpretation of the Bible. It also shows how to maintain humility and an open mind & heart when encountering those of another culture.

I highly recommend this book to anyone entering into a teaching career - even if you are not Christian!

This text correctly and succinctly describes the necessity of becoming a learner of culture. It is only human to believe that your own culture is the best and should be the standard for all others. Learning for the Stranger helps us move beyond ethnocentrism to appreciate the "other".
