Perhaps my greatest disappointment was that I do not feel that Luck deals with the cover blurb: Are you ready to accept God's power? There is some good here that make Soar still worth reading.

The Crown Publishing Group. Kenny Luck's book Soar challenges its readers to embrace the Holy Spirit and its guidance in our lives. Perhaps my greatest disappointment was that I do not feel that Luck deals with the cover blurb: Are you ready to accept God's power? There is some good here that make Soar still worth reading. Chapter 9 deals with the tragedy and it forced Luck to get out of his flip, hip, 3 part sermon with alliterative title words mode and deal with reality.

Jesus challenges Gods man to throw all those words out the window. Risk is for men who are ready to go to the next level in their faithand ready to say goodbye to playing it safe when it comes to radically trusting their Savior. Because, when it comes to your faith, all the energy spent eliminating risk from your life actually becomes a barrier to progress in your spiritual journey. Jesus said, If you try to keep your life for yourself you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sakeyou will find true life (Mark 8:35).

Soar is a book in a series by Kenny Luck, the Men's Ministries Pastor at Saddleback. The books goal is to encourage men to move into the power that has been given them to live the Christian life. His emphasis is very synergistic, even though he does throw in Scripture. This seems to be a trend in books that come out of Saddleback, so this was not very much of a surprise upon receiving it. There was interestingly a touch of Word of Faith theology. Discover the thrilling freedom of living in God's power Jesus' disciples were worried, because soon He would be gone. This is an in depth study which uses the workbook to work through becoming God's man. Our men's ministry has been using it successfully along with the other titles in the Every Man Ministry offerings. If you apply what you learn, you will become stronger and ready to take on more for your personal relationship with Christ. I highly recommend it along with the other books Fight, Dream, and Risk. Kenny reaches out and invades your space to challenge you personally.

Kenny Luck --- president and founder of Every Man Ministries and author of the first three books in the God's Man Series (RISK, DREAM and FIGHT) --- successfully offers a dynamo of a resource on the ministry and working of the Holy Spirit. In this newest offering, SOAR, he has created a complete and comprehensive roadmap for men to follow to, as he puts it, "Defying gravity...and discovering the physics of spiritual freedom..." Luck has a formula, and it is utterly practical in guiding men --- and often challenging them --- to put proactive, directive-oriented steps to their intentions. The game plan is simple.

SOAR -

*Say "yes" to the Holy Spirit now...make a switch.
*Open new doors to the Holy Spirit...make way.
*Actively pursue the Holy Spirit...make strong.
*Release the power of the Holy Spirit...make a powerful impact.
Luck preempts this motto by sharing a personal story where he needed to stop fighting the pilot who was teaching him how to fly a plane. The message, painful though it was to his pride, transferred into a spiritual takeaway: God is plain as day telling men to "Stop fighting ME" as well. When men heed this message, only then can the Holy Spirit begin the powerful work He longs to accomplish in every Christ follower's heart and life. Luck tells how God is moving amongst men in deep ways, urging them on by asking them to stop fighting His purposes, stop fighting the growth He wants to bring about, stop fighting the providence in a man's life, stop fighting His authority to mess with men's expectations, stop fighting His voice that asks men to go against their feelings for a bigger purpose, and stop fighting the new man He is making in the midst of uncomfortable circumstances.

Throughout this three-part text, Luck will direct men by giving directives on making transitions, transformations and transactions. In male-speak, he very powerfully tells the truth about being a man who is bombarded with self-oriented societal messages, conflicting inner desires, and spiritual laziness in today's world. Luck then tells men what to do about it. He offers vision, hope and help, and exhorts men by detailing battle plans for strategically changing their inner lives that translate into changing the lives around them for the good.

Luck expounds upon how the Holy Spirit works in a man's life to make a way where the path has been previously blocked by learning how to identify the Holy Spirit's nudging and welcoming these divine interruptions; by learning how essential a heart of gratitude is to living contentedly; by learning that the Holy Spirit still works miracles in people's lives, and men can be key change agents in relieving someone's pain, reducing someone's load, raising someone's spirit and reaching someone's soul. The book also includes a workbook for personal and group use that readers will find pertinent and an excellent ending to a timely telling treatise on working in sync with God and through the power of the Holy Spirit.

SOAR by Kenny Luck is a book for and about men. Along the way we read some things that we don't want to hear; and along the way we read some things that we need to hear. It's a book about the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and sometimes the Spirit is working long before we realize that He's there.
Pastor Luck is president of Every Man Ministries, and this book really is about every man. The men who haven't discovered the Spirit yet, and the prayer that they will come to know Jesus; the men who have recently discovered the Holy Spirit at work, and the prayer that they will grow; the men who are devoted Christ followers and the prayer that they will persevere.
Luck invites us to examine our faithfulness which he describes as the only character strong enough to defeat our moods or feelings in our moments of crisis or testing. It is the one thing required when we meet a command or priority of God and don't want to do it. Yes, he reminds us, sometimes even God's men don't want to follow God's will, but faithfulness allows us to answer God's call even when the World says `no'.
We are also reminded that we may not see many big opportunities to help others, but the smaller opportunities are found at every corner, if we just open our eyes to them.
This book is easy to read, and does contain some nuggets of information on recognizing the work of the Holy Spirit in every man's life, but it's a little to `general' for my taste. It's a basic christianese book: a quotation from a Christian writer at the beginning of each chapter, plenty of scripture references, throughout and a prayer to close each chapter.
Pastor Luck works with the Men's ministry at a very seeker friendly church, so the seekers among us would probably find this helpful, (and if I had read the first three books in the series, I might have been better able to engage).
Overall I think it's too `churchy' to appeal to the general public and not deep enough to appeal to the average member of the small churches scattered across America.
(I was provided a free copy of this book from Waterbrook Mulnomah in exchange for writing this review)
