The great mystery to me is how this wonderful priest has survived the attacks of the institutional church and lived to write and laugh about it! From essential Catholic schools being closed to the loss of credibility of our leadership, the people of the church struggle on despite the church’s best efforts to restore a pre-Vatican II mind-set.

by Dermot R. The mystery of God's call to priesthood. Basic qualifications. Whom does God call? How does the call come? Other influences. Sharing in the mysteries of Christ. On becoming the sacraments. The priest as priest. The priest at prayer. The priest as celibate.

The result of many years of active ministry, numerous hours of prayers, study, and writing on the part of the author, this work offers an answer to the question many ask regarding their parish priest: What do you priests do from Monday to Saturday each week? The answer lies in the nature of the calling itself which is a mystery on two levels: (1) the sacramental, ritual, teaching ministries and prayer life that flow from the vocation received, and (2) the mystery involved in the practical expression of that calling on a day-to-day basic which includes, among a host of other things: counseling, consoling, preaching, visiting the sick and homebound, caring for the poor and the elderly, challenging the youth of the parish, preparing liturgies, administering the sacraments (Baptism, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, the Eucharist and occasionally Confirmation), evangelizing the unchurched, overseeing the parish and school maintenance and upkeep, and you could go on and on. The priest is literally another Christ to the persons he is called to serve unreservedly. And while the challenge is great, the rewards are greater still. Hopefully those who read this book will conclude that the life of the parish priest is very fulfilling indeed, thanks to the grace of God, the presence of Christ, and the inspirations of the Holy Spirit.

YOUR PARISH PRIEST: A MAN OF MYSTERY, by Dermot R. Brennan, details the typical life of a Parish Priest. This interesting and inspirational book, filled with related scriptural verses, anecdotal narratives and nonsentimental commentaries, makes the Parish Priest a mystery no longer.
According to the author, the Parish Priest's lifestyle should also be ours as we journey together in our faith. Reading it has made me admire and respect all the Parish Priests I have known throughout my life.
A welcome book for those who question the validity of Priests in our 21st Century world and for those who have been inspired by a clergy man, it should be on everyone's shopping list to give to your favorite priest during this Year of the Priesthood!

As a former Catholic seminarian, I was intrigued by the title of Father Brennan's book.I was always curious what my life would have been like had I been able to clear the hurdle of the promise of celibacy. Father Brennan did a masterful job of revealing that so called mystery to me.He writes clearly and displays a wonderful sense of humor. Where have you gone, Barry Fitzgerald and Bing Crosby? I highly recommend it as an interesting, different, entertaining read.

I am blessed to call my pastor both mentor and friend, as well.
This book helped me to understand his many pastoral duties on a much deeper level.
I recommend this book to anyone looking to better understand these men who give their lives to serve both God and man.

This book is a wonderful way to learn more about a parish priest and realize what a priest does during the day.

excellent book for discovering what a pastor's life is like between Sundays! the author, at 86, is still ministering full time even though he is "retired"! mass at parishes on weekend, mass at a woman's jail on Saturday, mass everyday for the Marian brothers! a must read to understand the life of a parish priest!
