A new EY study of leaders from the world’s 5,000 largest companies shows that most CEOs over-estimate how disruption-ready their company is. In fact, those that feel most ready are those whose organizations have done the least. In fact, those that feel most ready are those whose organizations have done the least to prepare, while those who have made significant changes realize better the scale of adaptation required.

This is mainly a compilation of campfire stories. There is some good information in here but I don't think it is overly informative, nor does it really cultivate a heart for missions as I had hoped it would.

I start each morning with a chapter of this book. Quick and easy reads that jump start a day focused on living a missional life. Each chapter includes a challenge I focus on throughout the day and the best part is how Biblically based the challenges are- not leaving me wondering if I'm doing something Gayla suggests or if I'm doing what Jesus suggests- knowing full well Jesus is asking me to live a life focused on Him first and loving others as He loves them. I'm reading this book in preparation to travel with AMOR Ministries to India this August and I know it's preparing my heart to do the Lord's will. My favorite devo/story from the book so far has been Gayla's story about her husband's rationale for tackling a massive world issue such as poverty. His reminder that yes, a problem or issue might be massive but not to view it as SO large there's nothing you can do about it; view it as so large there's nothing you can do that won't help- in other words, I can't miss! I think this book is a must have for those heading out to the mission field or those looking to renew their eyes for the mission field they're living in their daily lives. This book has already changed my perspective and drawn me nearer to the Lord.

Disrupted is packed with insight to create long-term impact for a lifetime of missional opportunity:

* Practical tips for preparation, cross-cultural awareness, and reconnecting upon your return home

This book is both easy to read and well-researched and documented. It will be useful for those studying the phenomenon of short-term mission, and even more for those conducting and leading short-term mission projects. Short-term mission has exploded in popularity in recent decades, and Gayla Congdon is just the person to help Christians understand, reflect upon, and improve short-term mission philosophy and practice. Experienced short-term missionary, she both narrates and analyzes her experience in this book, coming away with practical suggestions and encouragement for short-term missionaries. Read it!

Very inspirational and well written. A wonderful devotional guide to add to your library. Highly recommended!

I was given this book by Christian Review of Books.

Gayla Congdon's book is not only inspirational, it is such a delight to read! Love the personal stories she has in each chapter and the devotions to help pull it all together. This book has challenged me to not only look outside of our country to serve, but to just look down the street to see the needs of people in our own back yards. How can we live a missional life right here...in our church, in our own community and beyond. I smiled and I wiped a few tears as I read this inspirational book on how to serve. A must have in any church library and in your own personal one as well.

My life was disrupted on an Amor mission trip and it hasn't been the same since. For the past thirty-six years Gayla's purpose driven life has followed God's calling as she has crossed the border from the haves to the have not's thousands of times. Jesus told us, "It is more blessed to give than receive." St. Francis of Assisi explained it when he said, "For it is in giving that we receive." Gayla co-founded Amor Ministries with her husband, Scott Congdon in 1980 and since then Amor Ministries has been building bridges of connecting the haves and the have not's, bridges between giving and receiving. It is a two-way roadway which anyone can take by going on a short term mission trip through Amor Ministries and building a house which is given to the poor. In Disrupted, Gayla gives testimony of her life story and testifies to life changing stories where the Bible says the builder of the house has greater honor than the house itself. I had a hard time understanding that especially after volunteering to build Amor houses in Mexico and South Africa where my life was disrupted. This disruption brought me to the Biblical understanding of what follows, "For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything." Gayla understands how lives are disrupted when they experience Third World poverty, she's seen it tens of thousands of times. In Disrupted, Gayla holds the reader's hand and walks with them back and forth across this transformative bridge. She tells the stories, relates them to God's Word and she never leaves the reader hanging. She always moves forward with directions of what to do next; a road map of how we can apply Godly disruption to our daily lives. Read Disrupted, cross the bridge and change you ordinary life into an extraordinary purpose driven life!

I received a copy of this book from Gayla herself. I took thirty minutes the following morning to read the first three chapters and first devotion. I wish a resource like this had been available when I was still in youth ministry and leading short-term mission trips. Great food for thought before, during and after your trip. And the devotions help to keep that feeling of 'disruption' long after the trip is over and in the rear view mirror.

I have had the opportunity to hear Gayla speak on many occasions, and each time I come away more challenged, convicted, and excited to serve God. In reading Disrupted I experienced the same things. The stories from her life and those around her, as well as the questions she asks in the devotions reach to your core. This is a fantastic tool for growth both before and after a mission trip, as well as in daily life. It is a book I will continue to read and use over and over again.
