Will God hear Zephenia's prayers? It is 148 bc, and the city of Nephi is ruled by the wicked King Noah and his corrupt priests. Zephenia's father has turned to his drink after the death of her mother, and her younger sister Sari dreams of living in the king's palace. When the family's hut is destroyed and the sisters are unjustly imprisoned, Zephenia wonders if God has forgotten her. If they survive their tribulations, whom will her father choose as her husband? The only unmarried believer she knows is Gideon, and he is smitten with Sari.Zephenia's thoughts keep drifting to Alma, the handsome high priest she met while gathering herbs in the jungle. She senses a goodness about him, yet because he is a priest in Noah's court, she knows he couldn't possibly be a righteous man. But when the prophet Abinadi is martyred and Zephenia must decide between her faith and her family, she learns of a mighty change that has happened in Alma's heart.

This was an amazing book that lets you travel back in time... 2000 years. The charactors immediately come alive (yes, very easy to relate to people of today).

The women portrayed are strong-physically, morally and emotionally, this really hooked me.

The plot is perhaps predictable, but then predictability, done well, can be enticing (which this book is) :).

Another interesting aspect is the geography, use of tools, clothes and food ect... Betsy Love pulls you into a world that is certainly painted with a brush much different than life today...

I hope she follows the trend started in Soulfire-characters we already know and the probability of daily life mingled with history.

This book provided every aspect of human nature to show itself. I could identify with many of the characters some good and some bad! Could feel the pain and the joy of the characters as they traversed their individual trials through the book. Wasn't ready for it to end. Keep 'em coming.

This book had me from the first page. Believable characters and plot kept me reading straight through to the end. I couldn't put it down. Although I was satisfied by the ending I grew to love the characters and can't wait for the sequel. Maybe a trilogy?
Keep writing, Betsy. I can't get enough!

As I read the first chapter, it didn't take long for me to determine that this was not a book I was interested in. The author's style of writing seems somewhat modern-day and slangy for a story that happens thousands of years ago. For example, "Now the only time Zephenia got to see Ester was . . . ." what kind of writing is "got"? On the second page there is a mis-print, so I'm thinking that there has not been careful editing of the manuscript. I have not read Danielle Steel books for years, but this book almost seems like a "sanitized" Mormon version of a schmaltsy romance. The title, "Soulfire" says alot. I was hoping for a well written story that would capture my imagination as we delve into a particular time in the Book of Mormon. That neither Deseret Book or Seagull book sells this particular item says a lot about the quality of this writing.

I read this book from start to finish in about 4 days. It is exciting and engaging- so much that it kept me up till 3am to finish it! Now that I have finished it I still find myself thinking about the characters and wishing I could read more. I hope one day we get a sequel!
This book is great on it's own but it also adds to your Book of Mormon study for the story of Abinadi, King Noah, and Alma (Mosiah 11-18ish). I just happened to be reading in Mosiah as I started this book and it really helped bring the scriptures to life (although it's important to remember that Soulfire is FICTION).
I highly recommend this book to those who love to read for great entertainment and those looking to add an extra dimension to their scripture study.

This story kept me hanging on every word. I loved the main character, Zephenia, and loved being in her point of view. Betsy did a great job keeping readers interested and concerned about the fate of Zephenia and her family. The book was well-paced and had a great voice. It was interesting to see the facts I already know from the Book of Mormon intertwined with the fictional story of Zephenia and her family. It was also fun to learn more about the time period. Betsy did a great job staying in the very distant past with her character's thoughts, voice, and actions. I would highly recommend this book! It makes a great Sunday read and teaches a lot about faith I learned so much from the character of Zephenia and can't wait to find out what happens next!

Oh, and did you take a good look at that cover? Isn't it STUNNING?! I can't stop looking at it. Beautiful!

I sat down to read one chapter after lunch....just one. I had a lot of work left to finish, after all. I came to when I reached the last page, throwing my entire day out of control and leaving me wondering if I had any emergency meals left in the pantry, since it was dinner time. I am a fast reader, but I had to read even faster because I was impatient to learn the ending. Even knowing what sort of person Alma was, I couldn't imagine the explanation for what was going on and just had to find out. It covered one of my favorite time periods and Betsy Love's portrayal of these amazing people exactly matched my expectations of who they were (well, Alma was certainly a surprise--or so it seemed.) I can't wait for the next book.
I have just finished Betsy Love's Soulfire. What a remarkable read to be given a glimpse into what the personal lives and circumstances of the Book of Mormon women might have been like. Through her descriptive narrative and dialog of memorable characters it was easy to step back in time and get a sense of their loves, their trials and their hopes and dreams. Her main character is one I would love to emulate. Betsy has a knack for keeping you enthralled to the end. ~Carolyn Adams Hanchett, Author
