For this holy task, with the blessing of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Gabriel entrusted Elder Nazarius with selecting capable men from among the brethren of the Valaam and Konevits monasteries. Ten men were chosen, and one of their number was Fr. Herman. In 1794 they set out from Valaam Monastery for their appointed destination, the island of Kodiak in the northern part of the Gulf of Alaska. This was at that time the headquarters of the Russian colonies in North America

The Book of Isaiah (Hebrew: ספר ישעיהו, IPA: ) is the first of the Latter Prophets in the Hebrew Bible and the first of the Major Prophets in the Christian Old Testament. It is identified by a superscription as the words of the 8th-century BCE prophet Isaiah ben Amoz, but there is extensive evidence that much of it was composed during the Babylonian captivity and later.

This book is part of Manley's very nice series of patristic commentaries. It provides commentaries on most verses of the Prophecy of Isaiah. It uses patristic commentary mostly from the first several centuries of the legalization of Christianity which include some of the greatest theologians the church has ever known. In addition to this, for many passages, it provides other sections providing Jewish perspectives and the perspectives of modern scholarship on the passage. This can be very useful since some of these passages have led to some of the most extensive exegetical discussion of any passages in the Bible (e.g., the almah passage).
It is also a very attractive volume. Recommended for anyone interested in patristic commentary on the Old Testament.

Why? Because it is the most helpful commentary I have ever read on the "Suffering Servant" (Isaiah 53).
