Pray Like King David

"...a man after His own heart " (1 Samuel 13:14 NIV).

David was always and in all ways compassionate, tender, and generous, yet he was fierce in battle. He carried in his bosom the very heart of God!

But David also reminds us of our vulnerabilities while showing us how to keep focused on God’s mercy and everlasting love.

David is the perfect example for us in prayer. Like us, he was multi-faceted and at times a bit complicated. He was a shepherd, musician, poet, giant slayer, sinner, devoted father and King.

Praying the Heart of David will comfort you and bring you peace as you discover the unfailing love of God through David’s persistence in prayer and worship. Praying with David brings us closer to personal fulfillment, lifts us into Heaven, and introduces us to the Messiah—Jesus.

As a new release in the successful Praying the Scriptures series by well-known author and respected Liberty University dean and professor Dr. Elmer Towns, you will walk closely with David as he teaches you to worship God vigorously—with full abandon and total compassion.

In "Praying the Heart of David," Golden Medallion winner, Elmer Towns captures the sense of wonder, the deep feeling of reverence, and the awe for God that King David expressed in his prayers.

Based on prayers from First and Second Samuel and First Chronicles the book is filled with insights into the life of Samuel and his significance in Israel's history as judge and prophet as well as a recorder of an important season in that history. Towns reveals spiritual lessons we can learn about listening to the voice of God in prayer and worship and the patience of God through the example of Samuel and his writing.

Towns probes deeply into the person and motive of Saul. He shows how the power of sin and demonic influence change Saul from a meek and humble young man to a selfish and mean despot. Saul's disobedience parallels the ways we often rebel against God's Word and will today. Towns uses Saul's sin offense as an example of the pattern and progression of contrition and confession. This one illustration is typical of personal applications found throughout the book.

David is described by Towns as complex. "He was at times compassionate, tender, and generous, and `a man after God's own heart,' yet he was fierce in battle and devious in his double sin with Uriah and Bathsheba." David conveyed the care and gentleness of a shepherd even as he described the Lord as his shepherd in the beloved 23rd Psalm.

The book chronicles the life of David, of slaying Goliath, his friendship with Jonathan, Saul's jealousy and plotted murder, Samuel's anointing, and of the death of Absalom. Interspersed with the narrative (Towns own paraphrase of these scriptures) are the prayers of David from the Psalms.
David's anguish, desperation, and utter trust and love for God become real as Towns brilliantly enables the reader to transcend time and place to experience and share in David's entrance into the presence of God through prayer. His victory celebrations, family disappointments, spiritual failure, sin and confession become real as the reader is convicted of personal sin and the promise of God's forgiveness.

"Praying the Heart of David" is a tribute to David and his persistence in prayer and worship. Joining with him in praying these prayers empowers and enables the reader to experience a new awareness and appreciation of what it means to pursue and become "a man after God's own heart."

This noted author provides for us an excellent book on David. This important book continues Dr. Towns great writings on "Praying the Scripture Series". Yes, we all know about King David, but this book tackles the praying heart of David. This 400 page book teaches us newness about the life of this Man of God. To me it is a love story for today. It is a 'must' read for those who want to grow spiritually, while learning the praying heart of King David. This is scriptuall-based and sound doctrine from this seminary professor and Dean of the School of Religion at Liberty University.

The author, Elmer Towns encourages the reader how to seek God's heart as King David did. He uses text from the books of First and Second Samuel, First Chronicles and the Psalms. The author's questioning techniques and illustrations of how to pray the scriptures will bring to light God's unfailing love through His son, Jesus. The book is definitely one that I will refer to often.

If you have ever wanted to talk to the patriarchs, especially King David, this book will take you there. It is a verse by verse study and interactive way to pray. Most of the prayers are applicable to not only King David's life, but also to modern life as well. This book really brings Kind David to life in a new and refreshing way.

Another great book by Elmer. This book is about the heart of David. David was a man like us, but loved the Lord with all His heart. David will teach you how to know God more deeply.
