James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. In such a Babel of interpretations it will clear the ground somewhat if we adopt once more as a guiding principle the common-sense canon of interpretation laid down by Hooker ("Eccles. Po. " 5. 59:2), that where a literal construction will stand, the farthest from the letter is commonly the worst. A literal construction of the expression "the twelve tribes of the Dispersion" will not only stand, but make excellent sense.

The Interpretation series is a well thought out and written commentary series, and this addition falls right in line with the other books in the series. This is a wonderful resource for preaching as well as writing a bible study.

Would be an excellent commentary if the author did not skip 3 chapters. This commentary is one of the best for leading Bible study. The author writes well and I was disappointed to see that whole chapters are skipped.
For that reason I cannot recommend the book for leading a Bible study.

Fortunately Mr. Limburg writes in language we can understand. So many Biblical scholars write "over our heads" for Seniors in Bible Study or Sunday school and it makes it difficult for some of the members to understand and keep up with the lesson. Our class is enjoying this book.

I know the author personally and so I am not at all surprised at the warmth and usefulness of this volume in the middle of the minor prophets. Useful is not the word for this. Extremely warm and lively is more like it, and very useful in the preparation of classes or sermons. You can tell that the author has taught students for many years by the way he breaks things down and keeps topics alive. GMM

. . .of the first six Minor Prophets written specifically for the teacher or preacher. While not an in-depth scholarly commentary (and this is not the purpose of the series) major issues and questions concerning the reading and interpretation of these books is well-presented.
The professional student is probably going to wish to look elsewhere for more depth, but the pastor, looking for a preaching aid, or the adult Bible study facilitator will find the volume most rewarding.
Recommended.

This is a great commentary for teaching. I am also a satisfied Amazon customer.
