The one. Holy, catholic, and apostolic. Every Christian must wish that such animosities, always ill becoming the servants and children of the God of love, should cease for ever. Truth indeed must never be sacrificed to secure peace; nor must we be tempted by the seductiveness of a liberality, falsely so called, to soften down and make light of those differences which keep the Churches of England and Rome asunder.

The word church is usually, but not exclusively, associated with Christianity. The term means something quite different for each religious institution that sees itself as belonging to the Christian traditions. The Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches each claim to be the one Church established by Jesus Christ, specially guided by the Holy Spirit as the Body of Christ. Reviews about Primitive Christian Worship: Or, the Evidence of Holy Scripture and the Church, Against the Invocation of Saints and Angels, and the Blessed Virgin Mary (2):

This is an early 19th Century anti-Catholic treatise, purporting to prove from the writings of the early Church that the Christians then believed as Protestants now do. The author, the Rev. Canon James Endell Tyler, was a Residentiary Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and a devout ant-Catholic. Having received a Bachelor's of Divinity from Oriel College, Oxford, the writing of this required a very selective reading of the Church Fathers, carefully omitting those parts where the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints were actually being invoked.

I suppose an argument can be made the the very EARLIEST Christians didn't invoke the saints, as there weren't any yet who had died...

Older book and as usual the language could use a lot of updating but still interesting to read and consider.
