I docked one star because they should change the name to "Pictures with an Electron Microscope." Almost all of the photos are done with an electron microscope. If you are looking for a companion book to microscopy with a compound microscope, there isn't much in this book that is relevant to a compound microscope. Although there is a section on crystals and polarized light with a compound microscope. Users of a stereo microscope would find this book very interesting.

This big, beautiful book offers an award-winning introduction to microscopy. The next few sections show sample microscope images at many different magnifications: bits of plants and bugs, and all the everyday kinds of things an eager beginner is likely to be curious about. It ends with directions for preparing your own slides using easily accessible materials (look for gum arabic at an art supply store).

Although this beautiful book will get a beginner off to an enthusiastic start, I'd hardly call it complete. It shows images from both transmission and reflection microscopy, without going into much detail about the different kinds of illumination. It barely mentions staining, and never gets into dark field vs bright field, phase contrast, polarized light, oil immersion, and other techniques, and never discusses binocular microscopes. But, for a kid who just got a microscope for Christmas, it's hard to imagine a better way to get started.

I purchased this book as an accompaniment to a fine microscope i bought for my & year old.

I can not say I agree with the reviewer who felt the photos were deceptive. Inspirational and fascinating YES! When I go to Paris I don't expect every place I go to look like a photo from a travel book. You will obviously never be able to see the kind of detail they were able to capture with there electron microscope but it creates a sense of wonder that, I feel, is very conducive to a child's passion for exploration. A dot of lice, that would normally be fairly boring to a child, becomes a alien monster and encourages the questions "What else is there?".

Gorgeous photos, well laid out chapters and interesting instructions on how to "do it yourself". I think it is a Must Have for first timers.

I think this book is very informative and beauitful illustrations, but most people and kids getting this book will not have the optiosn to get the same looks, colors, depths as these pictures show. However this book does have many projects for you to do yourself and go out and look at which was really good. I overall like this book.

Very pleased with this book. It is a good intro to microscopy, very informative especially for a beginner. Will be reordering. Timely delivery, and book arrived in very good condition, as advertised. Thank you!

I purchased this book, along with a nice microscope, for two pre-teens. Part middle-school level textbook, part coffee table picture book. Lots of colorful photographs and a good amount of practical how-to information, though if it had less of the former and more of the latter it might be a more useful book. Lots of the images are colorized electron microscope images which might lead some young novices to think that these are the type of everyday images they are likely to encounter on their own. The internet link mentioned is to the publishers website, with access to additional material via a keyword found in the book. Pretty good book for science-minded youngsters. Semi-hard cover, 96 pages.
We purchased this book along with a Celestron 44104 microscope and the 44421 Imager for our grandson to use for a science fair project. He earned first place for his project, "Hunting Freshwater Organisms", and these products enabled his success. The Usborne book is beautifully written and printed and bound. Our grandson likes Usborne books very much. This one is a "must have" for budding scientists.
