Standing on end in the yard was a tall length cut from the trunk of a big hollow tree. Pa had driven nails inside as far as he could reach from each end. Then he stood it up, put a little roof over the top, and cut a little door on one side near the bottom.

This book is a little disappointing. So much of the original story has been taken out that it does not convey the same beautiful message. It is quite boring. We very heartily endorse all the other books in this series. Sadly, for us, this one fell short.

Sweet and beautiful. If your family is not vegatarian, it might bring up that discussion with the kids, so be prepared!

I got this one used and really cheap, so all's good. But I have to say that I wouldn't buy it expensive and new. It is way too basic. It covers a tiny scene in the original book and it doesn't do as good a job of it as some of the other preschool books. Pa sees the deer, thinks about how his family needs meat, decides not to shoot them anyway, tells the kids about it. Not as much interest as others of the preschool books. This is one where the simplification is over simplification. The original scene does have some depth to it but this is pared down to a weird moral thing - he's a hunter but he decides not to shoot, this once. End of story. There is none of the depth of character and emotion that is involved in the original and in this case it is lacking because it kind of misses the point of the scene.

This book inspired my 6 year old to begin writing her own "Book of Good Books"! She dictated to me narrations of this book, and then others. Then she illustrated her "Book of Good Books" looking at this book's illustrations as her guide. What a rev iew! It inspired her literary AND her artistic talents!

Illustrations are wonderful. Story is condensed, but complete. My daughter loves these books.

This is a must for any one with children who love the stories of life in the early US. Our kids have enjoyed these stories and they are a great way to introduce conversations about how people used to live.
Beautiful illustrations. Of course, the content is obviously fabulous, seeing as it was adapted from Laura Ingalls Wilder's original series.
