In the epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf is strong and brave, though he does have some flaws. Telling these stories to the Danes, the kings people, makes him look brave, capable of fulfilling his heroic duties. When Beowulf first enters the story, he explains to the guard that he is there to kill Grendel, a monster that has been there for a long time (165-181). He goes to the king, Hrothgar, and tells him that he has slain enemies and monsters on land and sea both, making him the perfect person to come and kill the monster that has been terrorizing them for years (230-236). Telling these stories to the Danes, the kings people, makes him look brave, capable of fulfilling his heroic duties
