sunlight, animals eat plants, and bigger animals eat smaller animals .

We all know the basics of the food chain: plants eat sunlight, animals eat plants, and bigger animals eat smaller animals. In the world of nature, though, there are always exceptions, as evidenced by plants that attract, trap, and digest animals (mostly insects, but also the occasional snail, lizard, or even small mammal). The doomed animals are attracted by the plant's sweet-scented nectar, and once they fall into the pitcher, digestion can take as long as two months. There are about 150 Nepenthes species scattered around the eastern hemisphere, native to Madagascar, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

This book was perfect for one of my reluctant readers. He just hated, hated, hated to read. I first played a short BBC video clip from YouTube to engage him and then presented this book to him and he was hooked! The pictures are eye-catching and worked well with the text. This book led him to read other books about carnivorous plants with a higher text complexity and eventually to other books about plants in general.

My grandson asked for a Venus Fly Trap for Christmas so I wanted a book to tell him more about his gift. This book was perfect. Great pictures and nice information. My grandson is five and the book was just what I wanted.

I'm a middle school science teacher. I have these books available for the students to look at. They are pretty basic, but great pictures. Not a lot of information on them, but nice to have around for a general resource.

I purchased this book as a gift for my seven year old grand child to help explain the differences between the different typos of carnivorous plants. The book was accompanied by a pitcher plant.

I wish I had know the reading level of this book. It was way too young for my twelve year old grandson. I donated it to a first grade classroom.
Great for my 2nd grade son to read independently, or as a read aloud for pre-K and up. Now I've got to find live plants on Amazon and have them shipped because we're really into this subject now!
