Ancient Greece - it's had a huge impact on our culture, history and even our political system. Both the modern books I chose trace through the legacy of ancient Greece: what Greek authors and Greek ideas have meant, and may still mean. One of the books covers all sorts of different areas and the other-particularly close to the bone in 2017-is concerned with democracy. Tell me about your own interest in ancient Greece. When did you first become interested in this long ago time and place?

Relying on clues from the past, a team of 19th-century archaeologists uncovered Delphi, the site where ancient Greeks asked questions, and Apollo answered them. Greece felt a new need to encourage an appreciation of its glorious past and protection of its rich culture. It enacted laws against the sale of antiquities, created the Greek Archaeological Society, and encouraged archaeological endeavors from interested European countries.

Provides information about ancient Greece, including the history, culture, and daily life of the ancient Greeks. Introductory material offers a very brief overview of the long and complicated history of Egypt and Greece respectively. Unfortunately, the only maps to be found are quite perfunctory and lack some important details. For example, Greece talks about the importance of Macedonia, but it is not shown on the map. Also, the author refers to the god of the underworld by the Roman name (Pluto), rather than the Greek (Hades).

This DK Eyewitness Books: Ancient Greece, like the new DK series of books on Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt, is not an heirloom quality product as are the older bound version, this new format being more akin to a cheap Life Magazine level of product and disappointing. Some of the type (font) size is geared for books on the order of "see dick, see dick run". The index from my perspective is abbreviated. The entire product being a step backwards towards low performance expectation from publisher to intended child with the focus being on self esteem, thus low level content structured for the lowest common denominator rather than a product that challenges or inspires a pursuit for excellence by a 10-12 year old child. A child that at such age should be far more articulate than suggested by the marginal content enclosed in this cost reduction exercise of a publication. I recommend parents to skip this new product in favor of the old bound text edition or more substantive. As a point of reference, and not that far from my peers of the time, that by the age of 10 I was reading Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, by 13 Voltaire, by 14 Man and His Gods by Homer Smith along with the Naked Ape by Desmond Morris. I hope those reading this review are experiencing a similar level of development with their child and if not, why not? For at a typical science fair, I am not accepting of any excuses from participant to parents or teachers.

Overall it has a ton of information-- I wanted something to introduce Greece to my son before our trip there. I wish there was more 'stories' about mythology as that was in the description, but its much more about places/history that is a bit much for a younger kid.
Dancing Lion
Truly superb, easy-to-read overview of the Ancient Greeks with a boatload of first rate graphics. This book gets an "A"!

I had the pleasure to vividly experience the feeling of being next to bigger than life mythical creatures when I visited the mythical creatures exhibition in the weekend at the martime museum. It was an extraordinary experience. Mythical creatures have for ever shaped our imaginations in our beliefs of our lives and Greece is in the fore front of all these fantastic legends of gods, goddesses, heroes warriors monsters good and bad. DK eyewitness Ancient Greece is a mini museum between the covers. The coverage includes history, religion, people and customs, occupations, recreation, warfare and of course those great and powerful Gods and Goddess mythical creatures that were part bird part horse part lion whatever was at the time believable. The illustrations as per usual are all a feast for the eyes and give you a visual understanding of daily art, architecture artefacts and the people. There may be a myriad of books out there that are written on Ancient Greece this book however is so visual that you feel as though like the mythical creatures themselves of Ancient Greece you can step inside and, can experience been amongst them all that time which in the end of course is naturally a vividly extraordinary experience to be a part of emotionally and educationally in been a fantasy world of mythology.

Though the product was excellent, it used graphics which were inappropriate for the age of the intended user, so it was returned. Amazon cared for the return with their normal excellence! Thank you.

We gave our child the first book at age-5 (now 8). Remember buy the most current revision that has the CD library attached at the right upper hand corner of the book.
