For information about permission to reproduce. I wanted to explain how I got the Just Grace name from Miss Lois, our teacher, and how it was all a big accident. There are three other Graces in our class and Miss Lois thought it would be too confusing if we all kept our names like they were. She said we needed new names, so we could know whose attention she wanted if she called out the name Grace. Her big idea was to put the first initial of our last name at the end of our Grace name. I don't think anyone really liked it, but you can't argue with a teacher, because at school they mostly get to be the boss.

my daughter and I started this series last year. they are GREAT! cute stories, cute pictures. nice vocabulary sans constant use of words like 'stupid', or incorrect grammer (Junie B. Jones). we got through them quickly, though...were always waiting with baited breath for the next one. this year she's kind of outgrown them, and we haven't found a great replacement yet.

My 7-year old daughter is an avid reader. She swept through the Judy Moody and Junie B. Jones books, so I thought 'Just Grace and the Double Surprise' would be a good book for her. We both read the book separately, and Kyra's dictated review is below.

My take? 'Just Grace' is age appropriate and written well for it's intended audience, dealing with issues they might face in language they can understand. My daughter is still over a year away from 3rd grade, yet she really got into it. Charise Harper not only writes engagingly for young girls, but her art is entertainingly childish while not seeming forced. Her understanding of the 8-year old mind puts mine to shame, and it shows in her writing. The topics discussed have a positive message, making them very family friendly. It looks like 'Just Grace' is going to be the next, best series in our house. Time to go back and read the first six books!

Grace's best friend Minnie was going to get a baby. Her mother said it was going to be a girl. Grace always wanted a dog and one day she got it. Minnie went to go get the baby and she was so sad because somebody already adopted the baby and her mother saw a boy baby and adopted that baby instead. She was so sad that she cried in her bed.

The 3 year old boy's name was Robert. And so Grace gave Robert some stuff like a superhero cape, a comic book. Minnie's love began to grow for Robert. They went to school one day and their friend (another Robert) put Grace in a bad mood. When they went down for recess, Grace was still in a bad mood. Then she turned into a good mood because she found out that she did the best at her homework. The end.
Opinion:
I liked this book a lot. It's like a child wrote the book---because the pictures are child-like.

This is the seventh "Just Grace" children's book of the series, and I can see why they are so popular. Written in the first-person in diary format, the reader is immediately drawn into the world of eight-year-old Grace as she relates her observations of the world around her.

There's no problem with starting the series at this point because the author quickly has Grace review key pieces to her past without bogging down the new storyline. For instance, the reason Grace is called "Just Grace" is explained simply and quickly in the beginning, so all makes sense to the new reader.

As would be expected with a third grader, Grace illustrates her musings with great cartoon style pictures and graphs to bring a further dimension to what she writes about. Often it is these drawings that are the gems to why the "Just Grace" books are so interesting. For example, an early diary entry involves having to wait for the family of her best friend Mimi, to get a call that they are able to pick-up Mimi's new adopted sister. Grace lays out a chart that illustrates the different types of waiting she goes through. Some of the wait time is fun, and other wait times are not fun at all. But it is this type of illustration that gives the real insight to what it's like to be eight years old again. As a teacher, I couldn't help but enjoy the bit about how different Grace's teacher is compared to the substitute; and how students view too many choices vs. being told exactly what to do on an assignment.

The Grace books are geared for elementary school age students. As a read aloud "Just Grace and the Double Surprise" was perfect to inspire whole group discussions about a wide variety of subjects including expressing feelings, character perspective, and dealing with different personalities.
