Reviews about McGuffey's Fifth Eclectic Reader (7):

I purchased the first two readers and after reading through them decided to buy the rest of the series. This is a wonderful reading program and my two children, ages 6 & 8, love reading these short little stories. Both of my children are good readers so we use the readers to increase their fluency and for me to "test" them by having them read out loud to me. They enjoy reading to Mamma and I enjoy hearing them progress in their reading ability. I also love the life lessons that the children are reading about and appreciate the fact that they are reading some profitable, substantial material instead of much of the "fluff" reading that is available at the library.

This is a nice facsimile reprint of the McGuffey Fifth Reader. It will appeal to those interested in the history of education and those who are looking for additional materials to strengthen their child's reading skills.

My Grandmother had some of these. It's a sad and enlightening example of how educational standards have changed. Of course, I have long known that longer education is not necessarily better. Grandmother began school in the 1890's and was accepted at Wellesley. Therefore, I guess her small-town midwestern school was more than adequate.

I love to read schoolbooks of the past. They were much more educated than we are today, and the same for back in the day of my generation.
I was researching the life of someone for an historical book I am writing now. And I did find the event described! So happy to get this volume.
Bluecliff
I like the stories; but am disappointed that it doesn't have the questions at the end of each. It does have periodically. The words in the definition section are great along with the pronunciation marks.
Xava
Wonderful to read of life back in the 1800's and earlier.

Perfect!
Wish more like these were used in schools today.
