Michael Anthony Dorris (January 30, 1945 – April 10, 1997) was an American novelist and scholar who was the first Chair of the Native American Studies program at Dartmouth College. His works include the novel A Yellow Raft in Blue Water (1987) and the memoir The Broken Cord (1989). He married author Louise Erdrich, and the two had a family of six children. They frequently collaborated in some of their writing. They separated in 1995.

I thought that it is a very good book for teenagers to read and especially foster kids because that is what it deals with.

This book was about a little girl named Rayona. Her mom had a problem with drugs. Rayona's dad sent her to different foster homes until her mom got better. Rayona had a good time with all the foster homes. I think it was a good experience for her. Rayona wanted to live with her dad after she found out the problem with her mom. Find out the real reason for Rayona day.

Michael Dorris has created a character with Rayona that we can all relate to and love. This book was funny and touching and sad - a definite must-read for young adults and not-so-young adults!

I really like this book a great deal . The author did a great job in expressing the thoughts of young Rayona. This book really got to me and its one of those feel good books witch you would like to read during the lonely but happy times. Micheal Dorris is a good author and the story of the "Window" is simple enough to be fun but at that same time intelligent.

I read this lovely novel last year while taking a course in Young Adult literature in library school. I had never read Michael Dorris before, although I had read some of his wife's (Louise Erdrich) books and I knew about him. I found this book delightful, entertaining, serious, but not depressing or overwhelming, touching but not sentimental, and most importantly, extrememly well-written. Rayona's voice is so real and strong, that she's on my list of "powerful women". I recommend it as a treat to anyone who likes Dorris's work and as a satisfying read for any young reader. It also gets the "thin book" award, since I feel it has enough literary merit to be acceptable to a teacher, while still meeting my teen readers' requests for something "not too thick!"
