Lillian said, running her hand over the fabric. Sometimes instead of reading I just sat with her and sewed. Sometimes instead of reading I just sat with her and sewed ere turning to a doll. I still didn’t have an answer, but the steady act of sewing gave my heart some peace. We can make one for you when I’m finished, I offered. Or I’ll sew you one myself. Lillian’s face lit up. You could sew a doll for me?. I’ll ask Josie to bring a box of scraps up from her shed. You can pick out your own colors.

Sparrow Road sounds like such an interesting place. Is it modeled from a real home that you know or is it all fictional? SOC: Sparrow Road is entirely fictional.

Posted on May 24, 2011 by Cindy Hudson. Sparrow Road sounds like such an interesting place. I have spent time at several artists colonies, as well as a working retreat farm run by some wonderful nuns, and each one of these places is dear to my heart. In a way, they’re all part of Sparrow Road-but as a place-Sparrow Road is its own enchanted world.

Sparrow Road is a place for wishing long and dreaming, and so is this terrific novel. Sparrow Road is quite wonderful and I recommend it highly. Karen Cushman author of the Newbery Medal-winning, The Midwife's Apprentice, and the Newbery Honor-winning Catherine, Called Birdy "Sparrow Road has everything I could ask for in a novel - mysteries, secrets, a creepy mansion with a haunting past, a cast of unforgettable characters, and a twisting tale of self-discovery. Ann Martin, Newbery Honor-winning author of A Corner of the Universe show more.

Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, one young girl is determined to save her brother from the draft-and gets help from an unlikely source-in this middle grade tale perfect for fans of The Wednesday Wars. When eleven-year-old Reenie Kelly's mother passes away, she and her brothers are shipped off to live with their grandmother.

It's the summer before seventh grade, and twelve-year- old Raine O'Rourke's mother suddenly takes a job hours from home at mysterious Sparrow Road- a creepy, dilapidated mansion that houses an eccentric group of artists. As Raine tries to make sense of her new surroundings, she forges friendships with a cast of quirky characters including the outrageous and funky Josie. Together, Raine and Josie decide to solve the mysteries of Sparrow Road-from its haunting history as an orphanage to the secrets of its silent, brooding owner, Viktor. But it's an unexpected secret from Raine's own life that changes her forever. An affecting and beautifully written story of family and forgiveness, Sparrow Road is an incredible gift.

Sparrow Road is a beautiful, seamless story that unfolds like a quiet summer's day. Twelve-year-old Raine O'Rourke's mother moves them to a rural artist's colony without much explanation to take a summer job as housekeeper and cook. After her initial resistance, Raine is drawn into the quirky creativity and mystery of the place and discovers not everything (or everyone) is what she/he seems.

The story reminds me a bit of Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn Dixie (which I loved). I think older elementary schoolers, middle schoolers, and adults will love Sparrow Road.
I really loved Sparrow Road because of its amazing story of a girl who is taken away from her home for the summer to Sparrow Road. Raine`s long summer days consist of silence. In this amazing story about a girl`s summer of suspense, love, friendship, and dreams. I really recommend the book Sparrow Road.

I bought this book for my grandaughter, a voracious reader, and read it before giving it to her (as I usually do). Amazingly, I couldn't put it down. A wonderful story of strength, redemption and hope for any age, the characters are precious and well defined.
Sheila O'Connor's writing style captures the magic and beauty of Sparrow Road. A colorful cast of characters and a bit of a mystery makes this a true page turner. This is a coming of age story that is suitable for younger readers and enjoyable for readers of all ages.
Purchased for our daughter to read in 4th grade, as part of the Mark Twain requirements for a field trip. She said this book was AWESOME and would totally recommend.
My granddaughter loved it as a Christmas gift. She loved the book.
The fast read. Kept me up reading "just one more chapter." It was worth the loss of sleep, though. Unusual characters and a really good story line.
