Product Details. Imprint: HarperCollins. Fishing in the Air is my attempt to recast that scene with a father and his son. To me, it is about how we learn to see the world, and about the gift of imagination we receive from our parents. The title comes from a phrase in Walk Two Moons, in which Salamanca describes herself as a fisher in the air.

Raschka's gorgeous illustrations, reminiscent of Russian lacquered boxes, manage to portray the world of imagination, where the similes and metaphors of memory are allowed to take shape quite literally. This is a beautiful book about storytelling and the mind's eye, but also simply about a little boy and his dad who go on a fishing trip with a can of worms and a sack of sandwiches.

Reviews about Fishing in the Air (7):
Bynelad
This is a delightful tale of a young child who learns to fish with his dad. Along the way, we learn what they catch is more valuable than fish; they catch memories. Heartwarming, abstract, colorful.
Rocky Basilisk
A young boy and his dad get up very early one morning while the sky is still blue black. They make sandwiches, dig worms, pack the car and set off on their first fishing trip. As his father tells him, "We're going on a journey to a secret place. We'll catch the air! We'll catch the breeze!" But what they really catch are memories and the special bond between father and son..... Sharon Creech's first picture book is a beautifully written story full of imagery and magic. Her powerful writing comes alive on the page. You can actually feel the "bubble of breeze", see the "sliver of sky and white white cloud" and feel the "clear cool river that ripples over stones". Christopher Raschka's colorful, busy illustrations compliment the story perfectly and capture your imagination as they swirl around the page. This is a gentle, simple, moving story, perfect for youngsters 4-8, that will bring generations closer together and is sure to become a classic in the years ahead.

Beautiful story, magical pictures. This book captures what I am always looking for in a children's book, but rarely find with such perfection. A charming, simple story that gives a child something new to think about, combined with pictures that are real art.

Instead of "time outs", spending more time with your children, is the focus of this book. In it, a father and son bond by going fishing together. Out in the peaceful solitude of this natural setting they catch fish, and let their imaginations soar as they cast their lines into shimmering water. Lovely paintings highlight this charming story. Much like "Where Do Balloons Go?", by Jaime Lee Curtis, "Guardian Angels" by Naomi Judd, and "A Boy's Summer:Father and Son Together", by Gerry Spence. All four books are delightful and stir memories of the joy and simplicity of childhood.

As a children’s author myself (“Fishing Cousins”) I found this to be a wonderful book. My grand children loved the book and keep rereading it, great work.

Wonderful language and striking, whimsical illustrations!
I used this book in a tutoring session in which the child picked the book out on her own. We were able to find many examples of similes and metaphors, as well as repetition. There were inferences that could be made which is another higher level thinking skill best suited for the older elementary students. I would use this book with 2nd grade and older for these reasons.

The story is touching and has a nice message. However, the garish, ugly, busy pictures undermine the impact of the story. Imagine what this book would have been like if Wendell Minor had done the illustrations! Instead, the illustrations with their dreadful colors and awful images confuse and alienate children who are the assumed target audience. This will not be a book a child would be naturally drawn to and would stay on most library shelves, which is unfortunate since the story is so delightful.
Fishing in the Air
A child goes on a fishing trip with his father, but on this trip they go fishing in the air. What they catch instead of fish are the father's memories of his life as a boy and how his own father taught him to fish. A lyrical and moving story.
