by WENDELIN VAN DRAANEN. So when she’d see me looking out the window with my binoculars and say, Samantha Keyes, you mark my words, those things are going to get you in a big heap of trouble someday, I’d just say, Mmm, and keep right on looking. I figured it was just Grams doing some more worrying about nothing. That is, until I saw a man stealing money from a hotel room across the street-and he saw me. ONE. It’s not like I was trying to get into trouble. Anyhow, I cruised right by the bookstore and started checking out the hotel. Grams hates the Heavenly Hotel-calls it seedy, but I think she’s wrong. One time I even went inside. There was a man with greased-back hair sitting behind the counter reading a newspaper and smoking a cigar. He kind of eyed me from behind the paper, then rolled his cigar over to one side of his mouth and said, Lookin’ for someone? I just smiled and shook my head and sat down in one of the fuzzy green chairs they have waiting for you in the lobby.

With this debut book of a new mystery series, Wendelin Van Draanen establishes Samantha Keyes as a crime fighter to watch. Though, actually, the book opens with Sammy watching...a crime in progress. And when the man with the wad of cash in one hand and the open purse in the other catches Sammy watching him, the chase is on--but is Sammy on the trail of the thief, or is he on hers? If the police don't believe Sammy's story about a thief with black gloves, black glasses, and a black beard, she isn't too surprised. Vice principal Caan didn't exactly believe her either when she explained that she couldn't possibly have broken Heather's nose. Well, Sammy's not putting up with this. Does she look like a liar? She knows what she saw and how hard she can hit. And somehow she's going to prove it.
Reviews about Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief (7):

Good book in the mystery genre with strong, believable main character. Young teen girl Sami solves mysteries in this series while dealing with her own life difficulties of her parents' irresponsibility and absence, the mean neighbors in the building where she lives with her grandmother (against the rules that children cannot live in the building meant for low income senior citizens), and learning to figure out how to manage social situations at school. This book is well written and engaging and a good book for 4th graders to read and discuss.

Engaging beginning to a series. The protagonist faces real life problems and the characters are realistic and deftly drawn. This book will be the next read aloud in my 3rd grade class--it's good for the end of the school year, I think, as I think students will be engaged and want to read the next book in the series over the summer. Thanks for producing a quality piece of work, Wendelin!

My daughter is in the 3rd grade, she read it as part of a class project, I grabbed a copy and read along too. Sammy is a likeable girl with lots of spunk. This book is good for kids up to middle school. - it was a little challenging for my daughter due to the number of characters, but she did managed in the end. She laughed and shared the funny situations that Sammy got herself into and couldn't wait to find out who the thief was.
Opilar
