I found the Ayesha stories more intriguing and my understanding is that ‘She’ was even more popular than Allan Quatermain when first published. Quatermain, however, has probably stood the test of time better and has been more influential.

A modern reader may find the story predictable and derivative but that’s likely because King Solomon’s Mines became the template for so many stories to follow. What could be more boyish?

King Solomon's Mines book. The most offending attempt at literature in this amazingly labelled "classic" is the way Haggard deals with Africans. They're all "noble savages" who for some reason speak like medieval dukes. The 1885 publicity campaign for King Solomon’s Mines billed it as The Most Amazing Book Ever Written, and I don’t have too much of a quibble about that description.
