At age six Thomas Locker was discovered and given an apprentice training in. .Year' and the American Library Association 'Best Books for Children' and other awards. The Mare on the Hill (Picture Puffins).

At age six Thomas Locker was discovered and given an apprentice training in traditional European oil painting by painter Alberto Romano. His family then moved to Washington . where his father worked as a lobbyist, and where, at age seven, he won first prize in the children's division of the Washington Times Herald art fair. He also illustrated books for other popular writers such as Jean Craighead George. The Boy Who Held Back the Sea. Home: A Journey through America. Family Farm (Picture Puffins). Sailing with the Wind.

This picture book for older readers is not only a good story but also has beautiful illustrations to aid in the story’s telling. The book tells the story about the mare and how she eventually comes down from the hill. This is a book I would recommend for a little bit of an older reader. The illustrations are very focused on landscapes while the characters play a smaller part in acting out the story. This would be a great book for fourth and some fifth graders and could be very easily used in a lesson on seasons. While young children might enjoy the story and pictures, I think older children would be able to understand the concepts in the book a bit better.

The story is simple, yet appropriate for an extended age group, but what really fascinates me is the fantastic art. I own this book, but have gifted many special children in my life with it.

The Mare on the Hill: Not only are the paintings masterful, but the flow of the story gives you a change of the seasons which points to an older worldview and is priceless! The children have to learn patience over a whole year's time to get to know a mare on their farm with their grandfather.

Of all the hundreds (and possibly thousands) of books I read to my daughter when she was young, this was my favorite. She is 27 years old now, and I hope someday to be able to read it to my grandchildren. I remember my daughter laughing at me, because I always choked up at the end. It is such a gorgeous and evocative book, full of subtle emotion and wonder. Every child should experience this book.

My 6 year old who is just starting to read was fascinated by the almost "Turnerish" illustrations and the story of the white mare. More Locker books have been requested for birthdays and Christmas
My daugher checked this book out of her elementary school library every week for 2 years! I never tired of reading it to her, or hearing her read it to me. The feeling that the paintings and the careful, spare, beautiful text, evoked in both of us, and the lesson that it teaches - that the greatest love comes from patience, wisdom, and trust - will stay with both of us, always.
