'Conning Harvard proves that what I did over 40 years ago is 4,000 times easier to do today due to technology. Technology breeds crime and makes replicating documents and falsifying paper child’s play. This, added with the fact that we live in an extremely unethical society that doesn’t teach ethics at home and doesn’t teach ethics at school because the teacher would be accused of teaching morality, has brought us today to a country full of Adam Wheelers. For those who are naive, a must read.

Overview: Adam Wheeler's plan was as audacious as it was illegal: He gained admission to Harvard through fraud. While countless students dreaming of an Ivy League education compete honestly, Wheeler resorted to faking SAT scores, transcripts, and letters of recommendation. He applied for nomination to the illustrious Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships, and that gamble finally exposed his academic fraud

Zauzmer, now a senior herself, started covering Wheeler’s story for the Harvard Crimson when word got out, in May 2010, that he’d plagiarized his applications for Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships. Here, she traces the breadth and depth of his fraud, which started with his successful application, as a Delaware high school student, to Bowdoin College in Maine. She details how he transferred to Harvard by meticulously forging transcripts and SAT score reports, doctoring letters of recommendation and creatively reupholstering his resumé.

Reviews about Conning Harvard: Adam Wheeler, The Con Artist Who Faked His Way Into The Ivy League (7):
Phallozs Dwarfs
This is a fascinating book about all the details of the Adam Wheeler case. It covers Adam's time at college before transferring fraudulently into Harvard. It also covers his time at Harvard in great detail. The author did a great job finding out the specifics of his various scams and adventures. The only thing lacking is true insight into Wheeler's mind, but no one seems to be able to provide that.

This concise retelling of the Adam Wheeler story is an enjoyable read, especially if you or your children are participating in the college chase. Although no system is immune to fraud, I was amused/fascinated how easily Wheeler pawned off recycled crapola that he didn't understand on the admissions offices of Bowdoin, Harvard, Yale and Stanford, not to mention his English professors at Bowdoin and Harvard. He couldn't cheat his way out of Logic though. Contrary to some of the negative reviews, I thought this book read well, particularly for a first-time author.
generation of new
As other reviewers have noted, I really wonder how many people have engaged in scaled-down versions of the fraud perpetrated by Adam Wheeler and escaped discovery. It's just the fact that his lies were _so_ outrageous that did him in. Still, he almost managed to get a Rhodes scholarship. The real service this book does is to expose the insanity and stress of the college admissions process (already pretty bad in my day, but it's become exponentially worse) and how tempting it would be to get ahead by cheating.

I never knew a detailed accounting of faked transcripts could be so compelling. Wheeler's own silence and lack of interview accessibility have made it hard to answer the question "why did he do it?" Speculation from experts can only go so far. But the real question is "how did he (almost) get away with it?" On that, the author thoroughly and skillfully weaves the answers throughout the book. It is eye opening. There will always be those who try to game the system. Wheeler is unique in his over the top bravado. The system's shortcomings revealed by this ordeal: that's the real story.

The whole book should've been two pages maximum, double-spaced.

a great read

Excellent writing, exciting book about a subject not written about too much. High school students, teachers, and college admission officials should read this! Quite a job by a young, first-time author.

I just finished this book, and up until now I had no real comprehension of what it is like to apply to an 'ivy league' college, and all the processes involved! Zauzmer really put it all into perspective here, and therefore should be a MUST READ for any parents and students who aspire to apply! Also, obviously, this book takes a hard 'look', at the ABSOLUTE 'wrong way to apply, that is through cheating and other such devious methods. Kudos for Zauzmer in keeping us well informed of the vetting process and this most extraordinary example / case!
