Speculating on death in Palm Beach. An insurance salesman buys a policy on your life which he later sells and you split the profit. Seemed like a no brainer until Frank learns that other buyers are dying. He calls his friend Tony, an insurance detective, for help. Sensing his best friend and mentor is in danger; Tony flies to Palm Beach and meets Frank at the Palm Beach Grill. While at the bar listening to Frank's story Tony flirts with the image of an attractive brunette in the mirror. "His eyes slowly followed the line of her bare shoulder down the smooth tanned arm, stopping briefly at the bent elbow to enjoy her narrow waist, than up again past two plain gold bracelets to the long slim fingers playing with her hair. No ring. There was both sensuousness and class in this well-groomed woman's hands." Enjoying his interest she smiles a reply, but before he can approach her she disappears. While searching for Frank's potential killer, Tony visits the homes and haunts of the rich and famous, always with an eye out for the woman in the mirror, only to find she may be tied to the people who will benefit from the $4,000,000 on Frank's life. "A ghoulish gamble for investors. The sooner the policyholder dies the more profit they make." -Matthew Goldstein's Business Week

The title is catchy and so are the characters. I liked the story line and the different twists it took. Interesting story about an insurance fraud detective who goes to Palm Beach to help a friend who believes there is a scam going on with some shady people buying insurance claims and making money from them. Is a shady doctor killing people off for the money? Is the mafia killing people off for the money? Or are these people dying from natural causes? Read to find out!

Who knew insurance would be so interesting. Sit down with a mojito or some sangria perhaps and buckle yourself in for a page-turner and all around enjoyable novel. You will be glad you spent the time reading this and be looking for more of Mr. Brown's work. Fun and believable characters development and a great use of dialogue to move the story along. Nice pacing and just the right touch of mystery. Bravo!

I've been in Palm Beach many times so I enjoyed the descriptions of life there.
And it was true-to-life. My great-aunt and her friend used to dress up once every six months and go for tea at The Breakers.
Hats, gloves, dressed to the 9's. It was a high-light of their year. :)

This was a good book, with betrayal around every corner. A bit of the mob, a bit of a scam, a few murders, a bit of violence, a bit of romance... the action keeps going until the very end of the book.

Selling insurance policies to the elderly and wealthy in Palm Beach Florida is dicey at best. When Chicago area biggies start buying these policies as "investments" and the insureds start dieing "before their time" brings the insurance investigator to find out what is going on. The more he digs, the more dirt he finds. You will want to keep turning the pages until the end of the book. Good, suspenseful reading and a great description of the wealthy enclaves of Florida's east coast.

An easy to read story about an insurance detective who is investigating suspicious activity for his friend. It was very interesting and fun to read about the restaurants, hotels, roads, etc. in Palm Beach area. I have been there and imagined the locations well. Descriptions and character development were well done.

But you'll have to read through to the end to witness their delicious comeuppance. If you always suspected that insurance had its corrupt side, then you'll get an insider's look at how one of many possible life insurance scams might work and have lethal consequences to boot. Anthony, the novel's insurance investigator - smart, hard working and self-depreciating - is willing to take risks to find out what he needs to know. Women are attracted by his humility and by his willingness to be vulnerable with them. No James Bond who kills the villains and gets the woman at the end, Anthony takes his lumps, and like the rest of us, picks himself up and comes back for more. When you get to the end you'll hope, as I did, that author Erik Brown will deliver the sequel that this compelling story demands.

Not knowing one thing about the insurance industry, I was a bit confused in the beginning as to what the crime might be, but once I got into it I was hooked on Tony's escapades. The chapters are short and end with cliff hangers. The action is fast paced, and I sort of fell for Tony. He's the kind of guy I'd like to hang out with, be his friend, like the female detective. All of the local references make this an entertaining book not only for anyone who lives in the county, but for anyone planning a visit. It has that behind-the-scenes Palm Beach vibe. Erik Brown did a grand job of crafting a page-turner and memorable characters. Guess I'm going to order the next one...and I suggest you do too!
Forget the gothic hollow-eyed specter on the cover. Inside the reader will be immersed in a page-turning mystery of a seamy side of the life insurance business. Brown has created a memorable urbane insurance investigator with a Harvard education and an eye for women. He captures the Palm Beach scene perfectly. From Bice and Taboo to Green's and Hamburger Heaven, Anthony, the investigator, navigates the glamour and the not-so-ordinary lifestyle that makes Palm Beach, Palm Beach. While body parts on the beach are not an everyday occurrence that's where Brown's story-telling and brisk style come in to create a great read.

Brown's investigator is such a likable rogue with a romantic side that this reader would like a sequel.
