A well researched and absorbing tale about a woman years ahead of her time but also well suited for the trailing last edge of the 'wild frontier.' I found I identified with her to a great extent although I came along a generation later. Cowboy girls are not cowgirls but female cowboys who can ride, shoot, cuss and drink with the best and yet somehow still be woman and even at times ladies. Ms. Lockhart had her flaws but one has to admire her determination, daring and doing it her way!

What a great and beautiful and important book. I learned a ton about Caroline Lockhart (and her times and history, of course), but the greatest pleasure was seeing her seeking, searching, messed-up humanity. In fact, at times, I found that this book made my heart ache ---- because I could feel her desire for love, her desire to write (in a world that didn't particularly cozy up to that idea), her wish to be an independent woman. I admired her -- and then admired Clayton for bringing her back to life. A dry history, this is not. What surprised me most about this book was the emotional impact – I was wincing, rooting for her, celebrating her, and sad for her. Which makes me say: I highly recommend.

Caroline Lockhart's story is inspiring, motivating, sad, funny-- all the things that women's lives are. She was a great example of what the American woman can and it many cases should do. Loved it and just wish I had known her.

Great condition
Clayton had done a superb job of showing Lockhart's many sides. It would have been easy to write off her inconsistencies and changes of course as signs of eccentricity rather than delve into what made her tick. I had not known much about her before reading Cowboy Girl. Now I'll be looking for her books.
