Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister, OM, PC, PRS (5 April 1827 – 10 February 1912), known between 1883 and 1897 as Sir Joseph Lister, B. was a British surgeon and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery. Lister promoted the idea of sterile surgery while working at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Lister successfully introduced carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilise surgical instruments and to clean wounds.

Because there was an alarming rate of ward fever after surgery, Lister wondered what could be causing this event. Joseph Lister was the Queen’s surgeon for many years, and introduced the use of rubber drainage tubes after trying it on her.
